To be honest, I'd prefer that Bergy or Johnson get a shot before Moyer does. Moyer was pretty awful for Colorado, i think he should be 3rd or 4th in line to get the call up.

That was me when times were tough---of course now we don't need him to replace anyone but he can be a positive influence even in the minors.

Jamie Moyer has faced 8.9% of all MLB hitters. Ever. Think about that, for a second.

"He would be a great influence on the youngsters ! "

Totally agree - he might be able to help a few young throwers learn the art of pitching. Also, if he makes the club as a 5th starter somehow, his off speed slow balls might have the effect of facing a knuckleballer after facing a 95+ mph arm the night before.

I believe the Orioles set two club records yesterday.

Record # 1 - Most consecutive Oriole victories at Fenway Park (7).

Record # 2 - Longest number of years elapsed between releasing a guy and signing him again (16).

The Moyer signing comes as the second major "shout out" from the O's organization that they think they can win this year. The first was Tejada. You don't put those kind of players warming up in AAA unless your looking for stretch run juice.

He has not indicated he is ready to retire anytime soon but rumor is that Moyer has been mentioned as a possible pitching coach or even manager in the O's farm system at some level.

That is just plain astonishing.

"The first Major League game ever played, a National Association contest between the Cleveland Forest Cities and Ft. Wayne Kekiongas on May 4, 1871."

Probably 16,000 guys have played ML baseball in the intervening 140 years. Moyer pitched in the AL for a good long time and didn't "face" pitchers during that span. But that would mean that he's pitched to well over 1,300 different batters. Crazy.

The first ML batter Moyer faced, in his debut for the Cubs in 1986 was Ron Roenicke (Gary's brother) who is currently managing the Brewers.

That the first hitter he faced is a ML Manager beats saying that the first batter you faced died of natural causes, I guess. lol

"Record # 2 - Longest number of years elapsed between releasing a guy and signing him again (16)."

Interesting note, probably quite true as well. Some players will return to they're original team and sign a one day contract just so they can retire with that team but 16 years in between isn't likely in that scenario.

"... 1,445 Batters (Pitchers included)."

That (well over 1,300 different batters) was a pretty good guess though, wasn't it? :)

Thanks. You're my hero with regard to quantifiable data. I wanted to know... exactly... how many individual batters Moyer had faced but I didn't pursue the matter diligently.

Why did I want to know the answer to that one? God knows!

Umm, because he's 49 years old and been around so long that he's faced the likes of George Brett, Gary Carter, Dave Winfield, Nolan Ryan and yet still pitching in the year 2012. Curiosity can only kill you if your a four legged flea bitten fur ball...lol

Are you a four legged flea bitten fur ball Mike...lol

A former teammate of Jamie Moyer's died. He went to heaven. He struck up a conservation with Moses. Moses told the lifelong ballplayer that they played a game that was very similar to baseball after he led the Jewish people out of Egypt. Moses went on to say that he was surprised that the ballplayer had not heard the story before considering that Moyer was their best pitcher.
