I suspect he takes the deal. I think he loves the game and wants to win above all. He knows that ownership has shown a serious commitment to that and that he might not see such a favorable situation for success elsewhere whether it be for a few million more or not. Sure he loves the money too, I think we all would, but he's not stupid in my mind. If all he cared about was the money then there's little likelihood that he would be so good defensively. That takes harder work than just being a good hitter (which is still a seriously hard thing). BP wants to win in Cincinnati.

Of course, I could be wrong. Don't make me look bad Brandon! Take the deal!

I think he would be a fool to not take this contract. Foeget the possibility of injury because that could happen to anyone. I feel he needs to look at CoCo and Marshall and see what turning down deals from their clubs got them.

Joeys contract through 2016...

2013 29 Cincinnati Reds $17,000,000
2014 30 Cincinnati Reds $12,000,000
2015 31 Cincinnati Reds $14,000,000
2016 32 Cincinnati Reds $20,000,000
2017 33 Cincinnati Reds $22,000,000

Joey doesn't reach $25 million 2018.

The Reds five year extension offer would be 2013-2017 season for Phillips. That is why Joey's contract is back loaded, so the Reds could also sign Phillips.

Phillips will be 32 in the first year of his extension, and run through his age 36 season. Leaving him to be a free agent in the season he turns 37.

I think the 5 year deal is a smart move for the Reds, and I would not go beyond the 5 years guaranteed. I would include an option for a 6th year if it got the deal done.

Joey accepted a back loaded deal, Phillips should be a team player and take the 5 year extension at 12 million per season. It's a fair deal.

I would say no, it bothers me that he would reject that deal. I think its more than fair. Phillips already has declining speed and power. No way I would go 6 guaranteed.

I am still okay with letting him walk. Phillips has to realize that the Reds have several guys in the system fully capable of taking over second. He might pull a Coco and get less elsewhere.

I think the only team that would sign him to the money he wants is LA Dodgers at this point. Or the Giants. And I think the Cardinals would offer him a contract, believe it or not. But I dont think BP would go there.

He's crazy not to take what they are offering if indeed he has said no. Six years should be out of the question at this point.

Based on what the "Reds source" said. It sounds like he aint signing unless he gets the 6th year.. Which he is insane. Votto got a deal in line with what other first basemen in his caliber received. Phillips wants to be the highest contracted second basemen.. If I was Walt I would say we are done in negotiations if you refuse the 5 year 60 m deal. I say take the draft pick.

Yes, his use of CAPS is another cause for concern.

He started to use "MY CITY" in his tweets regarding baseball when Votto got his contract. Or the news of Votto's contract broke to media on Monday.

Clearly he is sending a message that he thinks he's top dog on the Reds.

Yes, Cancer...

If he would just quit trying to be Ali, and keep his mouth shut.. And respect his teammates and the front office like Votto did.... Then I would get off his case and be a fan again.

get over myself, you better tweet that to BP..

I am entitled to my opinion, your entitled to yours. I have to right to express mine. Its not because I am conceited. I could care less about BP. But this is a forum where people discuss their views, so my views will be expressed. Get over yourself if your offended by someone who's opinion differentiates from your own.

How has Phillips disrespect the front office and his teammates?

I don't think I said I was offended. And sure, you're more than welcome to your opinion. Your opinion can also be wrong, and it is.

I have posted links, upon links... and have went through this several times on this board..

Let me go on record as saying I hope Phillips gets his contract and signs for 5 years (I wouldnt give him anymore). I wish he would of handled some things (interviews, media interactions) a little bit differently. I think he is a great fan guy.. No one can pick it better at second. Do I think we could go with prospects and save money, yes. But I am not against resigning him if it makes sense for the Reds.

I am tired of arguing something so petty and stupid. I can't wait till he signs his contract so this board can put this whole thing to rest. And BP can go back to being a fan guy and player he is.

I think it needs done sooner rather than later, because I do think its a distraction. And a distraction that needs to be gone. Because its only one game, but I really liked what I saw from this team on Thursday..

I am officially done arguing on this topic..
