Disdain and respect don't have to be mutually exclusive.
90% of my family and friends I grew up with are "fundies" (fundamental Christian), and while I love them all to death, and respect the religion I grew up with, I also disdain a lot of what it causes them to do/say/think. There's a ton of positives to Christianity and other religions, but there's also a lot of ignorance and anti-intellectualism that goes along with it at times. Discussing anything to do with homosexuality/women's body rights/science in schools just leads downhill fast.
<The most annoying part is when anyone notices I've changed my views a bit since high school, they automatically take the Rick Santorum route and say "those damn atheist professors brainwashed you."
Its not a coincidence that increased education causes kids to rethink their world views a bit.
