>>>"IT'S ALL ABOUT MENTAL TOUGHNESS PLAYING IN NEW YORK..KEITH,CARTER, KNIGHT,THAY ALL HAD MENTAL TOUGHNESS."<<<

True, mental toughness is very important, but if a guy is injured, then he's injured.

Does Johan lack mental toughness when out with a bad arm ? Did Reyes lack metal toughness when on the DL with a bad hamstring ? Does Ike lack mental toughness cause he stay out last year with an injured foot ?

Even the guys you mentioned were down with injuries and pains at various points in there careers, in spite of their mental toughness.

I think the vast majority on these guys want to be out there everyday competiting. You don't get to this high a level without having at least some drive and competitive fire. So have more than others.

>> F Mart is the next....Jason Bay!

We will see. The kid has a ton of talent, but what good is that if he can't stay on the field.

"The kid has a ton of talent, but what good is that if he can't stay on the field. "

I never saw this ton of talent that so many people are talking about. I saw a kid who wasn't impressive at the plate, didn't both running out pop ups, couldn't field that well and really was completely unimpressive all around.

How anyone (not saying) considered this guy a five tool player is beyond me ... but of course, the Mets have traditionally been full of five tool prospects.

F-Mart is a dud, why anyone cares what he's doing is beyond me. Will the guy have a decent game here or there? Of course he will. Will he spend a good portion of the season on the DL? No doubt.

Remember, we are talking about a guy who never finished a full season in the minors because he was always hurt. So please, spare me the sob story for letting him go.

The very high % of kids that come up struggle big time. Of course there are exceptions to that. He was not ready for the majors. When a kid comes up they still have a lot to learn. Many kids that come up do not impress at first. It was a big concern for the Mets that he didn't run out pop ups, and may just have contributed to the Mets releasing him. He was MVP in the WBC. The talent is there.

>> How anyone (not saying) considered this guy a five tool player is beyond me ... but of course, the Mets have traditionally been full of five tool prospects.

He was considered a five tool player by many scouts. I didn''t see that in him when I saw him playing at Hagerstown in the SAL. He tore up that league. The Mets aren't the only team that labels prospects as five tool players. I don't think it's right to tell the fans that, but teams do it. When a kid gets that five tool tag it puts a lot pressure on him. Some scouts that saw Nimmo play consider him a five tool player. At least we haven't heard that from Alderson or his people yet.

>> F-Mart is a dud, why anyone cares what he's doing is beyond me. Will the guy have a decent game here or there? Of course he will. Will he spend a good portion of the season on the DL? No doubt.

All the injuires made teams believe he was injury prone. He's given no one reasons to think he's not. He was labled one of the top prosects in MLB until he showed he couldn't stay on the field. Teams knew he had great potential, but what good is it if you can't stay on the field.

>> Remember, we are talking about a guy who never finished a full season in the minors because he was always hurt. So please, spare me the sob story for letting him go.

When a kid has an injury in the minors, where he misses time, his development goes back two steps. The amount of injuries he had, for all intents and purposes, stopped much of his development. I understand totally why the Mets let him go and have no problem with it. The time had come for F-Mart and the Mets to part company. It would be just the Mets luck that the kid never has another injury and becomes an all-star. If it wasn't for bad luck the Mets wouldn't have any luck.

The argument is not that we let a burgeoning superstar walk away, it's that we let go a 23 year-old with potential upside to keep players like Andres Torres. F-mart may never be a legitimate major league player, but we know Torres isn't

Well said. I saw no harm in playing things out with FMart another year or two. He wasn't blocking any talent in the minors, and saving roster spot the veteran bench players, in year where we aren't likely to contend, does't make that much sense to me. And it is not like we have so many major league close OF prospects that we should give one up to the job of someone who might not be here next year anyway.

Could you leave Torres off the 40 man even though he had a contract for 2.7 million this year?

Exactly. Put him on the bench.
I rather see him that Willie Harris last year, and whomever they have this year on the bench.
A 23 year old, lefty power hitter...

They just drafter a young left hitter, why not keep another one.
Makes no sense.

a 23 YO with an arthritic knee who could barely run the outfield in winterball. i didnt have much problem letting him go. maybe would have kept him on the 40 man over lutz and satin, a pair of definite, never will be's.

This move was a cosmetic one, a Minaya Met blemish that Alderson gently wiped off.

cant really say it was a blemish. fmart was a highly sought after 16 YO who was offered more money by other teams but took less to sign with mets. just didnt work out. most of the underage signings in baseball dont work out.

Fair or not, F-Mart was emblematic of the failed promise and egregious hype of the Minaya era.

Can't really argue with that point too much. None the less, at 23 years old, the was stilll at least a chance he could be something, and he wasnt causing any harm by being in the minors.

There's a lot of people who still like this kid! I am disappointed he's no longer with the Mets.

They both were. Getting rid of them helped put the Mets in the dumper through most of the 70s.

Well, I don't believe in curses, despite all the recent bad luck. And actually, I don't really believe in luck. But they should've kept him for another year or two. He may not pan out. He could get injured yet again. But young players are a commodity you shouldn't part with quite so cheaply.
