    • obama's new energy push:algae?
  • 2/24/12

"now I hear he wants to make us the saudi arabia of algae energy production?"

No,you heard nothing of the sort.

"obama's new algae energy policy:"

No such policy exists, has been discussed other than possible investigation into the feasibility of algae as energy, and you know it.

It's well known that this is already being investigated.

"algae is not our solution."

How do you know? If it turns out to be, will you promise to only use oil-based power?

"the best policy is having the market develop these things. "

That's exactly what's happening.

so he is touting something that really won't be a major source of energy. maybe 1 or 2%? he seems to push things as if its the best thing to come along since sliced bread. maybe he really knows its not that great an idea for a solution, but he needs to push it for political reasons.

''No such policy exists, has been discussed other than possible investigation into the feasibility of algae as energy, and you know it.''

how much should taxpayers be on the hook this time? how many solyndras do we have to see go bust before we realize govt doesn't know how to pick winners in the market?

"Oh, and don't forget the Keystone XL pipeline, which would have increased the delivery of oil from Canada and North Dakota's Bakken Shale to Gulf Coast refineries, replacing oil from Venezuela."

That would also run through the Ogallala aquifer (the fresh water source for 1/3rd of the country) and across the most volatile fault line on the continent. When an earthquake of any magnitude would hit, 800,000 gallons (minimum before any possible shut down) of crude would flow into the aquifer and some of the most fertile farmland in the USA, rendering both unusable for at least 80 years. No fresh water for 1/3rd of the country, massive increases in food and fuel (50-300%), and no hope for respite.

Awesome idea!

then let someone like warren buffet invest in it. if its viable, some investors will want to cash in on it. only if its subsidized like ethanol will it be a solution. and that really to me is not a solution.

You do realize that there are hundreds of miles of pipeline that already run over that area.

good, then lets hope obama doesn't decide to risk taxpayer money in this. taxpayers shouldn't be put on the hook for this stuff..

As long as you don't need to create massive faults (fracking) with it, I'm all in.

yes, I always heard this and I hear the canadian govt has offered alternative routes. the reality is no route no matter how good it is will satisfy the nuts in the enviromental movement and obama doesn't want to anger them too much here. he is stalling till after the elections so that he no longer has to worry about their vote and money. I do believe it will eventually be approved, but for now its politics thats holding it up.

Well, you need to extract the algae oil and then process it into fuel. So, No1 would be fine under your guidelines since algae is still oil-based power.

"so he is touting something that really won't be a major source of energy. maybe 1 or 2%? "

That has nothing to do with your initial statement that implied the US was looking to corner the algae market.

"how much should taxpayers be on the hook this time?"

As little as is feasibly possible, like any other new technology.

"how many solyndras do we have to see go bust before we realize govt doesn't know how to pick winners in the market?"

How many more successful wind farms does there need to be before you admit that sometimes they can?

I didn't realize that you needed to fra ck to build a pipeline unless those bolts are 2 miles long. Do you not know that the oil would be coming from Canada?

There's a lot less product going through small pipelines than most people realize.

Also, why add to the problem?

So you are okay with oil being run over the aquifer afterall. Go figure.

its unproven technology. lets not jump in with both feet just yet. I won't mind if we spend a million or two researching, but with obama he wants to build plants like solyndra on pie in the sky ideas and later we are left holding the bag for billions of dollars wasted. can't we at least slow it down and not jump at every crazy idea till it shows signs its viable? is that really asking too much?

You are fracking scarry, truck. Those eathquakes in SoDak are pretty bad this time of year, good reason to sue and stop the Ohio oil work. Thank goodness people like you have spread the word!

Back to your roots, Mr. President. After all, who can better identify with Pond <Scum than you? And it's green! NO mention of the $2B gift to Brazil for them to develope the deep water oil field as BO's signature energy policy.
