Most teams in the 80's played hard nosed basketball with detroit being the toughest and thats how it should be played. Nobody gets an easy shot!

Players today wouldnt last in the old days because they would be complaining about the defenses. They are used to not having a had in there face and just going through the motions.

No, I have probably forgotten more about college basketball (or basketball, period) than you will ever know.

The thugs are also coming in from high school and going one year (hence the one year rule?). The better players are not worried about JuCo neither are the colleges about their grades (Memphis and Rose, Kentucky and Wall, Cousins).

I realize that there are some schools that are coming up. You must have missed the "for the most part" part of the statement that you used. I used Mizzou as an example. However, Mizzou is not a powerhouse yet. That is still Duke, Big East, UCLA, Kentucky, and the like. And, yes, they still are running the show.

The rules are something that I wish they would tighten down on a little. Could you imagine the numbers Oscar Robertson, Pete Maravich, and Bob Cousey would have put up if he had been allowed to put their hands on the side or underneath the ball while dribbling? There would have been unbreakable records. I understand why they do it though. People don't pay to see the ref blow his whistle. They come to see Kobe make a play. As far as the charging is concerned, a lot of those no calls are occuring inside that arc that they have made by the basket.

You say that it is not as fun to watch because of the rules and fights, and I can understand that. They have been doing the stuff with the rules in the NBA for a long time. Magic, Bird, Jordan, and Dr.J used to walk all over the gym, and NBA basketball was fun to watch while they played. I would agree that the quality of the NBA has gone down, but I think it is because of there being too many teams. This is watering down the talent with people that would not have made it 20 or 30 years ago, and it is spreading it out too much. Lebron said it right about a week ago when he said that there are too many teams. He said the NBA was great in the '80s because there were three or four superstars or every team. It is not that way now. I also think that the players are different now. Jordan was probably as mean an SOB that every played. Heinsohn used to tell people to expect to be decked if they came into the lane against the Celtics back in the '60s. I would agree that the act that is put on in the NBA gets old. It is too bad that there are not guys in that league like Heinsohn. That would not happen. You were not going to show up Larry Bird or Charles Barkley. I think they are getting a handle on some of it, and it will eventually be a lot better. I like the way they are calling technical fouls this year. Maybe that is just a step in the right direction.

They did the same many years ago. Converse made a whole ad campaign out of Bird vs Magic with the weapons. I thought Bird's shoes were just ugly but the Celtics were my team as a kid. A Celtics fan walking around in Magic's shoes (which were Laker colors). They were just cool shoes though. Had to have the first pair of Jordans too. You would get the Bird vs Dr.J or Magic vs Jordan. That is not new.

"A bunch of Chiefs players are at tonight's KU game. I decided to skip it. I'm not interested in seeing them play UMKC."

I don't blame you Jay. I wouldn't want to see a bunch of crummy Chiefs either.

This is the thing that I do not like about college basketball. They are playing way too many junk games. The season really doesn't start to matter until mid January. Now there are good games in team's schedules, but the majority of it is like the game Kansas had last night or Arkansas vs Texas-Arlington or Mizzou vs UCA. Come on.

Oh, so they did that with every team back then, too?

Tonight it's Kevin Durant vs. Jason Kidd and Carmelo Anthony vs. Tyreke Evans.

They were long since there, birdfan. Remember Celtics vs Lakers only a few years earlier when Bird got into it with Jabbar and McHale tried to kill Rambus? Don't forget when the Bulls played the Pistons or the Knicks. The Celtics of the '60s were not the tamest bunch either. Heinsohn would chase you into the stands. Russell was as mean as anyone playing right now. The Lakers, Chamberlain was nasty and so was Jerry West and Baylor.

I tend to prefer professional sports over collegiate sports because the teams can usually alter their fortunes more quickly - bad teams land the best young players in the draft while the exact opposite occurs in college. But I still can't stand the NBA. It s*cks, period. They provide a horrible product.

One thing I do wish they would go back to being stricter on is making them play man to man. These teams now are in a lot of disguised zones that are not very well disguised, a lot of 2 3 and 2 2 1. That started in the '80s too. The Celtics were the world's worst about sliding into a zone.

Bring it anytime you would like, brokeback. This is something you will get schooled on, and UCLA is a top25 team nearly every year and normally a high seat in the NCAA tournament. Of course, they are going to have down years like everyone else, but they load up faster than most.

I would agree with you that it was not as bad as it is now, but when the big names would play against each other, it would get the same kind of play. You would get the Bird vs Magic, which made no sense, because they rarely guarded each other. Magic was a guard and Bird was a forward.

The first thing I'd have the NBA do is enforce the rules.

I've seen LeBron James change his pivot foot and not get called. I've seen Kobe Bryant take five steps and not get called. I've seen Chris Paul double-dribble countless times and not get called.

The NBA s*cks. It's easily the worst major professional league we have in the U.S.

That hasnt been the case for a while now. Kind of like Arizona who was at the top for a long time but now are just not that good.

You always talk about how you know everything and how you are going to "school" everyone but I never see it.
