I was in New Britian today for the game.
As it turned out today's game against New Hampshire, Toronto's affiliate, was just six innings because the heavens opened up on a blistering hot day. There was lightning, thunder the whole deal. It came on suddenly and when it did I just left. After a nightmare drive home through a couple of hailstorms here I am.
First, I want to say that I couldn't get an answer on what happened to Arcia after he was subbed for in the 3rd. He looked fine. I was right behind the screen literally in the second row dead center behind home plate. I was right on top of the mic as a matter of fact. (When they put Colabello's double in the first up on the Rock Cats site you will probably see me. I was wearing a Twins ST hat from a few years ago, aviator shades and striped blue Polo shirt) ANyway, in the first Arcia grounded into a force out in the first and then crossed the plate after the next hitter Collabello doubled. Arcia ran right past me after he touched home and there were no visible signs anything was amiss. When I saw Benson out in right to start the 3rd I asked around and even tried to talk up some people to find out if anyone knew. I asked a guy with a radar gun and his partner jotting notes and they had no idea. They sat down behind me in the third inning. Still wondering what the deal was. Could it have been the heat? Dehydration? It was close to 100 degrees before the storms hit.
Hicks looks like a player guys. I might be eating crow on this kid. The guy runs the bases well and just has above average awareness on the field. He made his putouts look easy. In particular one in the gap toward left field that was hit hard on a line. He made the play effortlessly. He also had a well struck single to left that brought in a pair.
By the 3rd inning with Arcia out and storms looming I was getting antsy. So I decided to focus on Benson. One thing I noticed with him is that the guy appears to really be battling himself. He grounded out to short to end the inning and he got mad. He threw down his helmet and his batting glove and paced around until someone picked it up and brought him his glove. He ended up going into right for Arcia and Nate Hanson took his spot in left.
Dave Bromberg had a two hitter over six, but actually he should have had a one hitter because the shortstop Beresford ole'd a ball he should have had. I can't say I am all too impressed with Bromberg's stuff. I got a good look at him and nothing really stood out.
All in all, I am glad I went but at the same time I am disappointed with Arcia being yanked and the weather being what it was. It was about as hot as I could take. As soon as I saw lightning at the end the sixth I made a bee-line for my car. They say there is another Wednesday matinee against Binghamton next week and I will try it again. I feel like I know the ropes now. Not a terrible trip, btw. Under two hours.
