tim stauffer is the padres ace, but has developed a triceps issue and will be held back until a 5th SP in five days is needed. cory luebke is the padres #2 SP. after those two starters, the sdp have a bunch of #5's, which includes project volquez.

because stauffer is injured, and volquez has been moved up to the opening day starter, it does not automatically make volquez the ace. volquez was the reds opening day starter in 2011 also, but cueto was the ace in 2011.

not necessarily, why juggle everyones days rest? is lohse the stl #2 over wainwright now that carp is down? who buys into lohse will have a better season than adam? not me, but there is a justifiable reason to hold adam back.

luebke has 17 career starts, should he be the opening day SP, or just leave him on his schedule? there are so many concerns individually, that calling the opening day starter the ace, is extremely flawed.

EV is a vet who has done an opening day start. i'd guess bud black has a comfort level with that scenario, just like dusty had a comfort level throwing volquez vs philly (halladay) in game 1 (10' postseason).

I have to tell you that Adam Wainwright will not have a good year.

EV gets two big boosts:PETCO and Bud Black. He will shine in 2012 with 13 wins!

Latos is a very good SP but now he no longer has 2 big helps:PETCO and Bud Black.
He'll do worse than EV in 2012--maybe 10 wins.

Meanwhile: Grandal, Alonso, and Boxberger will all shine in PETCO. I see 20 HR by Yonder.
Ludwick will not match that. Grandal will be as good, or better C as Mesoraco. Boxberger will be sorely missed in our sagging--OVER-WORKER Jerked Around(By Dumbo Dusty)BP. We will sorely miss Coco.

Valaika and Janish ought to be on final roster--not Valdez or Harris.

W.Valdez: 34 y/o w/5 yrs ML exp(CWS+LAD) .243 BA--3 years in minors during Ml career!
W.Harris:34 y/o w/11 yr ML exp(BAL,CWS,BOS,ATL,WSH,NYM) .240 BA

P Janish 30 y/o w 4 yr ML exp .221 BA--but near Gold Glove at SS!
C Valaika 27 y/o w 2 yrs in ML(partial) .270 BA--did very well as Rolen substitute!

Chapman is so much more deserving of a SP slot--to replace Bronson:
BArroyo: 35 y/o 4.18 ERA with Reds (6 yr) 3.54 with BOS (3 yr) 5.20 with PITT 5.20--he has 4.28 ERA for his 11 yrs in ML.

The Numbers say: Chapman should be SP--Arroyo as RP(esp middle relief)
Valaika and Janish should be on 25 man roster--dump Harris,Valdez to LOU

Maybe J Francis should be on our roster too: 31 y/o with 7 yrs ML exp(COLO,KC) Lefty w/ 4.78 ERA
(that's Bronson territory--but Jeff is LH pitcher!!)

Alonso hit better his rookie year(albeit while playing a foreign position) than did Jay Bruce. As for Boxberger and Grandall, of course they haven't done anything yet. They are future prospects. Shelby Miller and Bryce Harper have done nothing at the big league level either but I'd be betting that you wouldn't include either one of them in a trade for Latos.

True EV was a head case. Made much worse by an Id***T "Manager" and Joke as Pitching Coach.

I love Latos. Make no mistake about that. But I would Not have given SD Alonso--no matter what.
I think he could be even better than Joey the Great.

Nor would I have let go of Boxberger(as SD demanded). And my aging crystal ball says Grandal will outshine Mesoraco in their ML careers.

Bottom line: we got ONE, lost THREE,and re-cycled ONE(EV). I call that a BAD TRADE.

But it's easier to be a pitching coach at Petco. Seriously.

Volquez isn't the pitcher you think he is. I realize that he's the Friars' opening day guy, but who else do they have? Lubke, or whatever his name is, will DEFINITELY outperform Volquez for the year......which won't take much.

I like Latos, and his 200 K's he'll bring to the table. A small park won't change that.

You can't out debate me. For example, I also said that you were wrong. Bottom line, you said EV was worthless but now you're saying that he is the key to making the trade look bad. BTW, you shouldn't judge about what you know nothing about. Also, taking a stand is not your strong suit, is it? ;-)

I just think it takes two years to return to the type of pitcher that you were before the injury. Be patient this year and you'll have your ace back next year.
