The problem with Stubbs is simple. He isn't a lead off hitter.

Man, what a <moron Talk about hiding your talent under a bucket.
Do you really want him to be continue to be a 200K/yr. hitter?
------------------------------------------

If you got it flaunt it, I say.
No way I want him to continue on the 200k pace.
In 76 Geronimo had 95 k's to tie for the team lead in strikeouts. It would be nice to get back to the well rounded style of play that was once the hallmark of the Reds.
I'm thinken hitting the ball with the bat would be a big step in that direction.

Could you imagine how successful teams today would be if they played more old school? I'll have to go back and look at the stats but I don't remember Johnny Bench or Tony Perez striking out more than maybe a 100 times a year. Today everyone is taught to grip and rip no matter what the situation. It cost the Phillies mightily the past two seasons.

So would I. I guess, like you said, when you got it, flaunt it. I never would have dreamt that having 200Ks was something to flaunt, excluding pitching of course.

lacking the ability to rationalize when to do it both from a personal standpoint and a team perspective.

See, i have always felt like this was a coaches decision to make. Of course these are big league players but in Little League we were not allowed to bunt unless the coach told us too. I would think 99% of the managers out there would rather make the call before the batter gets in the box instead of having the batter make the call.

Besides some jocks are not that bright, lol. (Mike Leake anyone?)

I'm sure there are stats out there for what happens when he puts the bat on the ball

.343 BA in 2011 on balls put in play. (i think thats the right average, going from memory)

I asked my nephews about bunting when they play. They're now old enough to play for their junior high team. They told me that they have never been taught to bunt.

Thanks for the stats. Those numbers are mind boggling compared to today's standards. I think the Reds need to pay JB to come in and talk to Stubbs and the rest of the team about the importance of putting the ball in play.

Barry Bonds hit .223 his first year in the league! I would bet you Stubbs puts up much better numbers than what you got posted, this season.
