On sunday..today..young wallace bounced back with a rousing 2-4 w/ 2 singles an a run scored....and 1 walk...ba at .324 obp .468 slugg .568
also turned 1 double play at third......

CLINTON, Iowa — He’d rather be digging his cleats into the batter’s box, but Quad-Cities third baseman Brett Wallace will spend the next three days on one of baseball’s biggest stages.

Wallace leaves this morning for New York City and All-Star Game festivities, which include a Wednesday ceremony where the winner of the 2008 Golden Spikes Award will be announced.

The River Bandits’ infielder is one of five finalists for the award presented annually to baseball’s top amateur player.

He earned the opportunity after winning player of the year honors in the Pac-10, where he led Arizona State to a conference championship and led the league in hitting, home runs and RBI the past two seasons.

Wallace hit .410 with 22 homers and 83 RBI for the Sun Devils this spring before St. Louis made him the 13th overall pick in the June draft.

“Definitely, it’s an honor, especially when you look at the guys who have won it or have been finalists before,” Wallace said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal, but I’d still like to be here helping our team and working on my game. My thoughts will be with them.”

Wallace will miss two games before returning in time for Thursday’s home game against Burlington.

“I hope he takes time to enjoy everything,” Quad-Cities manager Steve Dillard said. “The Cardinals are proud that he’s a finalist and the chance to go to an all-star game, that’s great.”

In addition to attending Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium and participating in an autograph session at a fan fest earlier in the day, Wallace will watch tonight’s big-league home run derby during his first-ever visit to New York City.

“That’s going be pretty neat, going there and going to Yankee Stadium,” Wallace said. “I am looking forward to that. It’s an honor to be selected with the other finalists.”

He’ll be joined by Gordon Beckham of Georgia, Aaron Crow of Missouri, Brian Matusz of San Diego and Buster Posey of Florida State, the other finalists for the 30-year-old award which is presented by Major League Baseball.

The group of finalists was selected from more than 200 players who were nominated from throughout all levels of collegiate baseball

I'll be happy if Wallace wins it, but I'd be lying if I told you I wanted him to win it over Aaron Crow.

Either one would be cool, but I think it's going to be Gordon Beckham or Brian Matusz.

I've been trying to keep an eye on Kozma. I'm not sure if he's about where he should be or not, never really followed that many players out of high school. Being that he just turned 20 and is in his first full year of pro ball, doesn't seem like he's doing to bad. I keep hearing people compare him to Mark Loretta, I'd take that, but I'd think he'd have a little more pop than Loretta being that he's about the same size in high school as Loretta was in the pro's. But yes, Wallace looks really good so far.

this year he is struggling in the field w/ 16 errors and at the plate .261 with 60 k's....still very young and still working hard , still well liked by the org. I look at his stats everyday also....he does have 13 dbls, 3 trp. 3 hr
I really have not watched him play like i did wallace in college...so i dont have a very good opinion of what he can do ....

I wasn't sure about his defense. Sounds like he's got some work to do, but I wouldn't count on a guy drafted right out of high school for AT LEAST three years. I just hope he's not Tyler Greene all over again. This team needs a franchise SS badly and I guess I'm just hoping they found one with the 18th overall pick. Tyler is hitting .298 with 3 HR 4 2b's and 1 3b in July so far, long way to go in the month though.
