After 2 years of eratic defense and over 1200 sub par ABs, I think some fans had the right to be a little concerned over the Nat's shortstop. I wasn't quite ready to run Desi out of town (mostly because his stock was so low), but I did want to see the Nats acquire a decent hitting LH middle infielder and move Espy to short, making Desi a super utility type player. Nothing wrong with a bit more competition and Desi would have had plenty ABs and chances to reclaim his position.
As a Nats fan, I'm as happy as anyone with Desi's sudden surge of power, but I will hold off a little and wait for a few hundred more ABs before I begin really believing in the guy. I also think Desi should be buying Adam LaRoche a few comp dinners. Just knowing that you are throwing to good receiving 1Bman probably helps with the confidence defensively. Just another reason why the Nats not only need to exercise Adam's option, but consider extendeding his contract for another guaranteed year.
