read my original post:

"god....sometimes i really hate gary...now im not BLAMING this on him but COME ON!"

i said right from the start that i dont actually believe it impacts the game...i dont know why people keep ignoring that...its not superstition, its etiquette

"

look im not saying that i believe that gary talking about the no-no is what did him in...im just saying you don't do it...

"

I'd bet money that every no-hitter, ever, has had SOMEONE mention it before it was over

"i said right from the start that i dont actually believe it impacts the game"

Then why be ridiculous?

"...its not superstition, its etiquette"

No, it's tradition, based on superstition

As Kay said, it used to be "tradition" for people to own slaves. It was "tradition" to put butter on burns. It was "tradition" to bleed people to cure illnesses. It was even tradition NOT to bathe, because people thought bathing too much was harmful.

There a lot of STUPID and/or HARMFUL traditions. That's not an argument for continuing them.

"yeah...but usually somebody winds up mentioning it..."
Are you saying no one mentioned previous no-hitters for other teams, out of millions of people watching?

This is stupid and I can't believe someone would believe something like this, even out of tradition.

Yes, but those traditions were backed by circumstances and information available or the like at the time. What is referenced in this thread is a superstition based on nothing but an idiotic form of etiquette.

"i value tradition"

Only if it's right.

"Only ignorant people believe in jinxes"

Really? Niese will probably wear the same underwear, uncleaned, for his next start because of this outing, and if that next start goes the same, he'll be donning them again, and again. It's superstition, and all these ball players are superstitious.

You think those rally caps really work?

i don't think gary mentioning a no hitter made it end per say, but has anyone noticed how SO MANY of gary's comments end up?
"this guy hasn't hit a hr in 857 abs" next pitch, guess what.
it's ridiculous how gary seems to jinx them.
lol

It's confirmation bias. We notice it when it happens, and don't when nothing special happens.

I hear what you are saying. It annoys me also. I don't think the new generation gets it.

Gets what? That it is a time honored superstition that has no basis in fact? Get real all those that don't want it to happen mention it and those that want it don't mention it. Neither group have any power over what happens.

The radio crew were dancing all around the actual term "no hitter" all afternoon as Niese was getting it done. they made light of it a few times, without coming out and spelling it out for the listener. Much of the convo was about the dillemma Warthen and TC faced approaching the last couple of innings. Very intriguing...not sure what i would have done...but Niese made it easy for them..losing it fast.

Did anyone really think he was going to get it with that strike zone? What a joke.

and yes, it approached "breaking news" status on many of the sports websites, etc. by the 6th inning.

I was thinking about the decision that would have to be made but I didn't say anything. Didn't want to jinx it. LOL

95 or so...with a 7 run lead...I let him make the decision for them...which is what he did.

I thought we were in for a long day based on his start with the walks.

Not the first time he's flirted a nono....not the last either.

I was thinking that once he had the 7-0 lead he should just throw all strikes and see what happens. First pitch swinging and alot of balls hit right at defenders was the only way he had a chance of going 9. Anyway, the Braves look pretty bad offensively, I hope that's because of Mets pitching....
