Why don't you show some good will and create that thread now.

As was pointed out right before me, the Sox would have to play sub .370 ball to not get to 80 wins.

And at this point, failure to get to 80 wouldn't prove you know anything in baseball. Rather, it would be a monumental, but flukey, collapse. An outlier.

Oh... you're all so impatient. Do you mean that I wouldn't get ANY credit if they had 79 wins? Geez, you guys are tough!!!

The Sox are the greatest team of all time!!! Not saying that they'll NOT play under .500 ball the rest of the way, however. Am not a total believer yet.

No, you wouldn't. Had you said "the Sox will win 78 games" then I'd definitely give you some credit if they won 79 games. Because you were off by 1 game.

But you gave yourself a 14 game spread. If you go outside a spread by that much, how much credit do you honestly think you'd deserve?

I don't think impatient is a fair desription. You've been wrong for three months now. That's a lot of patience.

But barring all that, the Sox will win 90+ games this year. So why you come back with 79 is beyond me.

"The Sox are the greatest team of all time!!! "

This sarcasm is why everyone is so annoyed with you, and why the "gloaters" come out. For me personally, your sarcasm is what makes your being wrong so pleasurable.

"Am not a total believer yet. "

Why? This is August now. It's not some song and dance. It's no fluke. No smoke and mirrors. The Sox are in a pennant race and are legitimately one of the better teams in baseball.

What flaws do the Sox possess that makes you stay away from the joys you could be experiencing?

No way that they'll win 90!! They're great, but not that great!

To win 90 games, the Sox would have to 31-24 the rest of the way, .560 ball. They have already played at a .551 clip this year. What makes you think they can't get to 90?

Where will they stumble?

I think so many people on here don't understand what this post is about. I am not blaming Dunn for anything. I am not blaming anyone for anything...People say that average is meaningless, if thats what they believe, fine. what this post is about is the ability of one man that is hitting 60 points below average and what would this record be if he had gotten another 10 hits in key times in 10 different games he went 0 for 4 or 5. Thats all... plain and simple.... why do you put words in others mouths? Not Konerko or Rios or Alexi, but Dunn. You people change what I say by adding.....Well he would have gotten his 1 hit when nobody was on... But thats not what I was saying... why even say that...
Again, where in any of my posts in THIS thread do I put blame on anyone?? Nowhere. Even if he did have 10 more hits at key times and we won 10 more games what would his average be??? Still way below his lifetime average.... He is being paid superstar money and should be expected to do what a superstar does, win games, mainly in the clutch when needed. Isn't that what the big bucks are for?

Agreed. If Adam Dunn had 10 more hits, the team would be better off. If De Aza had 10 more hits, they would also be better off. If Youkilis had 10 more hits, they would be better off. If Konerko had 10 more hits, they would be better off. If Rios had 10 more hits, they would be better off. If Alexei had 10 more hits, they would be better. If Beckham had 10 more hits, they would be better off. If AJ had 10 more hits, they would be better off. If Viciedo had 10 more hits, they would be better off.

10 more hits would obviously help no matter what, but we don't care about Dunn's low average because average is not a good indicator by itself of how well a player contributes to scoring runs, and those metrics which are better indicators of that indicate that Dunn is a much better hitter than a lot of players who get more hits, because those players make outs more often and don't hit for as much power. So you can keep crying about Dunn's average but it makes LESS sense than to cry about some of our weaker hitters' power, or less patient hitters' walks.

Players are not robots despite what so many people like you seem to think; they come with traits which come together to build the profile of a player. Dunn's profile is one of a low average hitter who walks a lot and hits for a lot of power, and that is a better profile for scoring runs than a lot of people. You could ask him to try to get more hits, but it's reasonable to believe that that could compromise his power and walks and when he's already valuable offensively, there is no reason to change him. On the other hand, someone like Viciedo who <fucking swings at everything like a douchebag should be asked to improve his discipline, because that is more important than average AND will probably make him a better hitter overall.

You say that you weren't blaming Dunn for anything, and yet you close your post by saying that due to his contract, Dunn is expected to win games in the clutch, implying that he doesn't there by blaming him.

So which is it?

Regardless, your whole premise is off as Dunn does win games for the Sox.

"that makes you stay away from the joys you could be experiencing?"

In a post full of good points, that might be my favorite one. I'm enjoying the fact they've had a better season than most of us were expecting.

Thanks.

I think that's what I don't get the most about ceb and some of the others.

This 2012 season has been one of the better seasons we as a fan base have experienced in a long time, with tonight's game being the perfect example.

But some people would rather hold on to wrong suppositions, hoping that the Sox fail so they look baseball smart, or nitpick about minor flaws.

What pleasure is there in that?

Does Dunn get ten more hits this year that don't leave the ballpark?

He has 31 HR and 78 hits in all in the 108 games played. If he plays in the remaining 54 games, that works out to (54*/(47/108)) or 23.5 hits. As he's sinking toward the Mendoza Line again and may miss a game here and there, it could be very, very close.

If he wins the Comeback Player instead of Rios it will be a joke.

Man some people are so amazingly stupid. It's like you'd rather he gets hits that don't leave the park. As if home runs are worse than singles.

I think tomorrow would be a great time for Mr. Adam Dunn to have a day off. A tough lefthander is pitching and the Sox are doing OK so let the slugger catch his breath and maybe watch some video of himself making contact. He's getting too close to the Mendoza line.

First, a little civility is in order. You can disagree without being disagreeable. Try it.

Second, there are plenty of hitters out there who hit home runs and have a high batting average:

- Ryan Braun: .311/.393/.598
- Edwin Encarnacion: .292/.389/.574
- Miguel Cabrera: .324/.385/.583
- Mark Trumbo: .293/.350/.578

Toss in Robinson Cano, Adam Jones, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton for starters and you'll see it's not out of the question to ask for more than .205/.343/.484 with a mind-blowing 159 strikeouts.
