    • Why do you guys want Bourn?

"But why this guy? Angel Pagan is better. "
No he's not. There's this thing called defense and you did not address.

Fine, he's a slap hitting defensive outfielder. We already have Mike Baxter.

"Michael Bourn is a pretty terrific defensive center fielder. Last year, he was the best defensive outfielder in baseball by UZR (after you account for the positional differences), grading out as 25 runs above an average defensive player, and it wasn’t a one year aberration, as no player has a higher FLD+POS rating over the last four years either. With over 6,500 innings big league innings, we’re not dealing with problematic small samples either. Bourn has been a tremendous defensive asset this far in his career."

Interesting discussion on future value:

But again, > Pagan.

"We already have Mike Baxter. "

Mike Baxter is a fourth OF'er at best. He is not and never will be on the same level as Bourne.

Bourn immediately becomes our best outfielder...by a huge margin...that's why. Who cares about a draft pick? This years Nimmo? Who cares. By the way, Nimmo can't even hit at Brooklyn. To early to make a judgement...but...he looks like he's going to flop early.

You can't really be serious with the "already have Mike Baxter" comment.

Outstanding speed and defense do not grow on trees. He ranked 2nd in all of baseball in both SB and UZR last season.

Statistically, his value was $28.9 million, ranking 13th in the game and 5th among outfielders.

I think they only will do it if they can get MLB to say the 11th pick is protected. If so, Bourne may be willing to take a 1 year deal, with the Mets promising not to offer arb so he's not in this mess again, and try for the big contract next year. It seems apparent he isn't going to get the deal he wants as long as he's tied to the draft pick compensation. That leaves only 10 teams (9 if the Mets don't win the appeal since Pitt is in the top 10 twice) that can offer him this. They can even tell him they will trade him to a contender at the deadline.

Because he gives you great speed and defense and that is where the Mets lacked. Where have you been?

He's a poor man's Jose Reyes. (But not NEARLY as good). Reyes used to get killed for his low OBP out of the leadoff spot. Bourn is worse.

Wright gets called 'whiffboy' for his high # of K's.....Bourn is worse.....and he doesn't even hit for power.

If we were talking about a Delmon Young type contract here, then most definitely. But rumors suggest that he wants approx $15M per year.

No effin way.

"Reyes used to get killed for his low OBP out of the leadoff spot. Bourn is worse."

They're essentially the same: Reyes has a career OBP of .342, Bourn is .339.

"Wright gets called 'whiffboy' for his high # of K's.....Bourn is worse"

Again, same deal: Wright's 162 game average is 130 strikeouts and Bourn's is 126.

It's absolutely crazy to talk about a guy who is among the best stealing bases and defending in terms of a Delmon Young type contract.

He's just not that good though. He's never had a .749 OPS.....Reyes never had one lower than that.

Bourn K's WAY too much for a leadoff hitter. Fine, you say that Bourn and Wright K at about the same rate.....not really a good selling point for Bourn when one is a leadoff hitter and one hits in the middle of the order.

It seems that the FO is trying to make up for their mistake of not locking up Reyes, but they're trying to do it with a FAR lesser player.
