My reasonableness check on the idea that Ryan makes 35+ more plays ("dozens" to use your word) a year than the average ML shortstop is as follows. Mathematically, a hit prevented with great D is just as good as a hit made with a bat. So instead of Ryan making those amazing extra defensive plays, lets instead give him extra hits. If you add 20 hits to Ryan's current year-to-date performance (we're part way through the year), he'd be a .275 hitter.

In other words, Ryan is, net, if he really does in a season make an extra 35+ defensive plays versus an average ML shortstop, just as valuable as an average fielding ML SS who can hit .275. Why then, does he not earn way more money? Why aren't the Billy Beane's of the world looking at this supposedly obvious math and offering him a nice fat contract?

ryan has value and is underated by most but some ppl on here r now wayyy overrating him.

We now have Truinfel, Franklin, Miller, Marder going 2B now apparently, Romero 2b also now** all within 2 years of being called up in just the 2b-ss positions. there is no way ryan is good enough to hold all these guys off

No way. Brendan Ryan is the BEST defensive player in the world. It would be insane to waste his talents on the bench .

Yeah, as if any of those prospects outside of Franklin are even notable.

wonka u should just go back into the hole u came out of (your single mothers basement) your immaturity is very laughable haha. i did need a good laugh tho so thanks! you obvy dont no anything about anything and i stoped listening to u after u said ryan was best defensive player in the world. ryan is a great defensive player SS but there are a lot of pitchers in this league that could hit better than him. I am a ryan fan but he will not be on this team as a starter for more than 1 season. go do some research and be quiet.

Because we traded for him from a team who's head coach didn't like his personality and signed him to a nice cheap team friendly deal. Because we were smart other teams must not value him? If Brendan Ryan was a FA after this off season I guarantee you he'd get a contract for more than 1.3 mil per year. You know that, too. You just won't admit it.

Can you prove anything I said wrong? Who plays better defense than Ryan? And why are a couple of those prospects outside of Franklin notable? Come on little boy, you can do it.

Your case is 29 baseball GMs, and the dumb billionaire owners that employ them (all except the Ms), are stupid and can't compute basic math. And your talking about the Cardinals (Ryan's former team), who are such idiots at assembling talent, that they went and won a world series? Let us hope we can be owned and managed by similar talent-less bo-obs sometime soon.

If Ryan was so valuable, Zdur would have traded him. We aren't gonna win now or in 2013, no reason to retain a soon to be 31 year old SS. We traded Ichiro, who pumped attendance and helped us make money in Japan. But we kept Brendan Ryan?

You know all the above, too. You just won't admit it.

The GMs do value him - appropriately. Case closed.

> If Ryan was so valuable, Zdur would have traded him.

The Yankees asked us about him. Z said no. He's valuable to US as well. We don't have another MLB short stop in the organization. He's a league average shortstop making peanuts on a team without any other shortstops. Why in the world would we trade him when we're going to need him for at least another season?

What do we offer him after the season? Seems the Mariners want him back and he likes playing here. If the rest of our offense didn't s.uck so bad, I don't think there would be much complaint about him. He does win some games with his glove.

He's warmed up at the plate recently -- .288 in July, .385 in the last 7 days. Wish he could sustain it.

"The Yankees asked us about him. Z said no."

Is that why Kuroda chose him for a target?

So, we traded Ichiro for two less than overwhelming minor league arms, we traded League for another two minor leaguers ... which in the short term undoubtedly weakens our pitching, and weakens our outfield, but its all about next year (or the year after that) at this point .... but we held on to soon to be 31 year old Ryan cuz he's so valuable?

The Yanks or whoever must have offered us even less than we got for Ichi and League. Cuz we do have other options at SS (Kawasaki, Figgins for starters), and in 2012 we're destined to finish either last or last in the AL West, so losing Ryan would have hurt the Ms nada. If anything, at thi point any kind of win streak worsens our draft position.

Again, if your statement of, "every year, he makes dozens of plays an average ML SS does not make" was remotely close to true, multiple GMs would be banging down our door for him, making substantial offers, per the math I posted earlier. You just don't understand what UZR means (and importantly, does not mean).
