    • What good are umps?

"The umps union would go nuts."

Oh well.

The problem with K zone is that it isn't 100% accurate either. The camera is slightly off center, and is elevated.
If you want to start using multiple camera angles, then it would take time.

they have a reasonable review process right now, it's not ideal, but it will take time for MLB to allow technology to decide or influence a game.

the purists would stroke out if "cyclops" made a call.

they should do what rugby does, go straight to an extra official for a decision, not drag 3 of the umps off the field.

But if they start reviewing balls/strikes, then the game would really drag on.
Ump makes a call, check review from multiple angles, change if necessary. Repeat with next hitter.

I'm all for plays at the plate being reviewed, and maybe bang-bang plays at other bases.
I'm against fair/foul calls, check swings, and trap/catch calls being reviewed.

I don't want balls and strikes reviewed, plays at the plate and disputed home runs would be enough for me.

But seeing three fat dopes trudge off is a waste of time, make a phone call and get the decision quickly.

This has been a trend for a few years now. No one knew who the Umpires were but NOW, you can name every one better than you can name some of the players...

The Umpires have NO ONE to be accountable to and they want to be part of the outcome of the game, and until someone at MLB has the BALLS to step forward and put a stop to it, it will be status-qo every game...

Oh for sure man. I'm just saying something electronic that is binary. It either crossed the plane, or it didn't. If it worked as a unit where it required the plane to be broken from more than one angle, then fine. That can't be that hard to rig up.

Just seems like so many calls are "wow - that was....REALLY off" type calls. It's like Bobby V (who I can't stand but he was right) said. You're asking a human to do something that's beyond their capability, so maybe a human shouldn't be doing it.

I agree, balls, and strikes are not an issue with me, but when an Umpires bad call changes who, wins and who loses, there should be a review.

The most glaring example of this was of course the perfect game by Galarraga being blown due to the bad call. The review could have let Joyce off the hook too.

As long as you have umps you'll have blown calls. You just can't remove umps from the game - that's how it's part of the game.

One thing that people that want to see machines call balls and strikes never take into account is how would a machine monitor foul tips, check swings, etc??

Just something to think about....

Honestly I'm one of them (for balls and strikes). You can still have umps for the rest. I'd like to see limited reviews though, as discussed earlier.

I don't think you can remove on-field umps. They are a necessary part of the game.

...and yes, the calls do even out as the system stands.

I would like to see expanded replay for sure but I never want to see the umps taken out of calling balls and strikes, do as good of a job as you can trying to get the umps to call a consistent strike zone, use a reward penalty system to get them more cosnsitent, but I never want to see them eliminated....
