I'd still take my chances on spending $1M and sticking him in LF/PH role.
he was playing LF for Las Vegas and went 4-5 with a triple in his last game.
there might be a 1/2 season worth of life left in those legs.
I have always been impressed by Vlad. He is a professional hitter to be sure. But, I can't imagine him in the NL at this point in his career. Pitt is the most run needy team in baseball, so they might take a chance on him...maybe.
I like the call on Dempster for the Reds. The Reds are living and dying with pitching. As they go down to the wire, they are facing three teams with better pitching (Washington, Pitt, LAD) and St Louis is not far behind.
I say forget the aging sluggers, open the wallet, and go with more solid pitching.
