    • A Question About Thornton

Right, so out of 52 games this year he has seven losses. As a reliever who is a set up guy, or a face the lefty guy, IMO, seven losses is a pretty good sample size. And four times he got the win. Well you call it what you want and I'll call it what I want and we'll agree to disagree!

Who would you want setting up the game instead, and who do you want closing (b/c I'm guessing you don't like Reed either)?

Wait until there is a larger sample size of Brett Myers, then you will complaining about him as well.

Relief pitching wins and losses mean very little.

Cliff Politte had 7 or 8 wins in relief in 2005.

Your opinion doesn't matter. For anyone who knows stats, it is too small of a sample size. Even if you think for some reason that his record is of importance, if you want to use stats, you have to acknowledge the sample size.

Reliever W-L is pretty much meaningless.

That's your opinion! Some others thinks it has meaning.

I agree. Arguably the most important statistic when I am doing my calculations.

I watch games, I don't spend time on a computer calculating the play in the game! I just watch! And most of the time I watch I don't like Thornton's pitching. That's me. You won't change that with stats!

<I calculate this shit for a living and I'm telling you that wins/losses is the most important stat.

Enter that in a word file and save it!

Always a good stance to take. Why let things like reality impact your feelings and emotions.

That's such a bad argument.

Do you really think people who use statistics (why that word is such a scary word to some people is beyond me) don't watch the games?

I think most people know that Thornton has struggled in some games this year. But he's not been the albatross that you and others suggest he's been.

And complaining about his W-L record is assinine. Wins and losses for starters has been shown to be much more a team dependent stat in evaluating starting pitchers. Look at Felix Hernandez's Cy Young from a couple of years ago.

Its even more meaningless for relief pitchers. It has way more to do with luck and timing than being a fair evaluation of a pitcher.

If you value a pitcher based on his wins or losses, you're valuing him incorrectly. That's not opinion. That's fact.
