Don't be naieve ... even if Leafs had've won and manage to catch the Caps they'll get creamed in the tie breaker. Caps have 5 more regulation/overtime wins over the Maple Laughs.
The team is doing what they always do .... they can't even lose right , win the odd game to bring them a mediocre pick at the draft.
Burkie did a lot of questionable things this year. His roster is now not suited for Carlyle's style of coaching. He has an overabundance of 3rd liners which has been commonplace for years. Majority of players have no heart/desire to fight for the puck. Never seen a player so invisible every game as Connolly. And hated when he drafted Biggs last summer ... sure, its the 'Lucic-like' size they need to compete within their own division but he'll be another 3rd line player, second at best. This team consistently fails to draft high end first line talent.
I was getting tired of Wilson's smug attitude and Burke's bully mentality is growing old quickly as well. For him to easily dismiss the 4 first round picks he could've possibly gotten (I'm assuming for Reimer, Grabo, Schenn and possibly MacArthur) was puzzling. All his players have maxed out their potential. MacArthur is exactly what he was in Buf ... has a good year ever other year. Grabo's contract was market value but leaves the Leafs with no size up the middle. Schenn is overpaid and a 5th Dman. As far as Reimer goes, not writing him off ... I blame the goalie coach 'cause neither him or Jonas are playing the same style that brought them personal success. Allaire's over technical approach is taking away their natural ability as a goalie to trust their instincts (say what you will about Toskala but he told Allaire where to go when he knew his style made him uncomfortable)
Even if he didn't want to wait for these players to develop ('cause he avoided the total rebuild in the first place) ... he still could've used those picks to acquire a missing piece.
One thing is for sure, Kessel will be useless if Leafs ever make it to the playoffs. He is intimidated very easily.
