Edwin Encarnacion extended for 3 years and $29 million (8 in 2013, 9 in 2014, 10 in 2015).

The rare deal that elicits no response positive or negative. Seems downright reasonable.

yeah. breakout year with no track record. i say it's a good middle ground. and if they ever want to trade him, this is a very digestible contract.

I looked up 02, 03, and 04 and none of them was as bad as I remembered it as far as the fifth starter record. I don't know why it just stood out in my mind. Maybe I got it lumped in with the year Todd Richie pitched for us.

one thing that isn't easy to extrapolate, though, is the the wear an tear a crappy fifth starter puts on your bullpen. they may win that game with good relief work, but may lose the next (say - with your "#1" starting) because of a taxed pen....

Luckily our other starters have been so dominant that it hasn't really been a problem.

But you're right. It illustrates why we need some pen help and we'll definitely be looking for a SP if Humber isn't ready to jump back in the rotation. Quintana's already over his innings from last year? And Sale may be able to pitch 10 games at most before he's probably near his limit?

It definitely is a factor. I think that they must work up numbers with different scenerios but when you have someone who has trouble getting into the 6th, it leaves a lot of innings to cover. What really hurts is when you end up using a bunch of your relievers in one of those games but end up losing anyway.

And the post AS break baseball season starts with...a rain delay. Rizzo's run at the playoffs is put on hold.

The White Sox have recalled Jhan Marinez from Triple-A Charlotte, the club announced over Twitter.

Marinez was acquired by the White Sox over the winter as compensation for Ozzie Guillen's departure to Miami. The fireballing righty has a 3.14 ERA this season with Charlotte (43 innings) and has 296 strikeouts in 266 career minor league innings. He has control issues (4.2 BB/9 this season, 5.6 BB/9 career) but if he can harness the control at all the 23-year-old has potential to be a very productive MLB reliever.

Yep. And they'll probably be active at the deadline too. Definitely the team we need to worry about.
