BULL PEN - This part is tricky, because, for example, Eppley threw 1.1 IP. But he had 4 appearances. One was 1.0 IP. One was 0.1 IP. And the other 2, he didn't record an out. So it says, 1.1 IP, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Just know, this has gone on a bit with all of these guys.

Eppley ----- 1.1 IP - 2 runs - 13.53 ERA --- 0-2 record
Logan ------ 1.1 IP - 2 runs - 13.53 ERA --- 0-0 record
Phelps ----- 7.1 IP - 0 runs - 0.00 ERA. --- 1-0 record
Qualls ------ 0.2 IP - 0 runs - 0.00 ERA ---- 0-0 record
Rapada ---- 2.0 IP - 1 run --- 4.50 ERA ---- 0-0 record
Robertson - 6.0 IP - 1 run --- 1.50 ERA ---- 0-1 record
Soriano ---- 5.0 IP - 3 runs -- 5.40 ERA ---- 0-1 record.

BULLPEN
23.2 IP - 9 ER - 3.42 ERA - 1-4 record

TAKE AWAY PHELPS NUMBERS
16.1 IP - 9 ER - 4.96 ERA - 0-4 record

I wish when I was looking up all these boxscores, I could look at the WHIP for each player individually and as a whole...that’s wher the problem has lied...these guys are allowing too many base runners....there’s 31 appearances here, and 5 of the 31 didn’t record an out. out of the other 26, 10 of them pitched less than an inning. That leaves 16 appearances of at least one inning or more...as you can see, Soriano and Robertson have 11 of those. so David Phelps is the only one who can get more than 3 outs in a game, and he’s done it while allowing about, 2 or 3 base runners total....with a TON of strikeouts. Eppley and Logan seem tired. Soriano and Robertson, I assume will be fine. Rapada and Qualls, believe it or not, haven’t given up a run in this whole run, as well as Phelps.

This team will be fine...we've hit a bit of a funk, where the law of averages caught up to us. We aren't getting blown out. We are just having a bit of bad luck....keep your heads up ya'll...

I have no idea how you can say this team is fine. You are acting like they are in first place or something.

In all honesty I want to thank you for your posts. It's nice to read thought out posts based on stats instead of most of the nonsense found on the board.

It should be troubling though to lose so many close games.

Because winning close games are the hallmark of good teams in general, not losing them.

The good teams will have that little extra to pull it out, the Yankees haven't.

The rotation has still held its own, outside of Sabathia's start against the Red Sox, but the pen and the lineup has regressed.

Your well-reasoned and researched post gets a grade of A minus.

I would've given you and A, except you made a snide post about my wife's weight in another thread!

I think he was defending you. The team is in fine shape. Starters have been good. The BP and the offence need to pick it up. I know they will.

Not hitting with RISP will doom this Yankee team in the long run. Down the stretch when playoff hopeful teams throw there best pitchers if you can't get singles and doubles along with Homers then you're going to have problems. Yanks also have to Start Phelps and put Garcia as the long man. CC has not been his dominate self for awhile.

No problem. Thanks, good to see some people appreciate it instead of just saying dumb sh*t...

True, but OBVIOUSLY we won A LOT of close games during that 42 consecutive game streak. We're just having a bit of bad luck to be honest. The starting rotation has still pitched very well. Sabathia's start in Oakland wasn't awful, in fact, Soriano blew it in the 9th. 3 runs in 7 innings should be good enoguh for this team. Like I said, it's the bullpen that is not only giving up leads, but like last night...they are extending leads as well. We need the bullpen to be picking up our offense right now. As mentioned before, the strength of this team is it's depth. Ibanez and Jones picking up Gardner. IChiro picking up Swisher and Gardner now. Chavez and Nix picking up A Rod. Kuroda, Hughes, Nova and especially Garcia picking up Pettitte and CC. Soriano picking up Robertson...not a lot of other teams can claim that. Most teams with injuries are out of it now like the Sox and Phils. The reason the Yanks have battled from these injuries is our depth. While the offense is a bit banged up right now with Alex and Tex out, we need the bullpen to hold leads, as well as keeping the game close. When we are losing 3-2 in the 7th inning, and Logan gives up 2 runs (with 2 outs, nobody on, mind you), that just extends the lead from 3-2 to 5-2. We ended up scoring 4. If Logan could have just gotten that last out, we probably win last night 4-3. Same with the Felix game. We were down 3-1. We scored one in the top of the 8th to make it 3-2. We go out there and give them back a run, to make it 4-2. Why not hold it at 3-2 and give the offense a TINY bit better of a chance...We haven't done that AT ALL this year up until the past 12 days. I remember last year, a majority of our losses, we would battle back, and then their lead would be extended, and it was like, 1 step forward, 2 steps back in the late innings of games we lost. We haven't dealt with that this year until now...hopefully the bullpen can get this thing straightened out. Joba's back tonight, hopefully that's the boost we need....

Good stuff. Teams go through periods of highs and lows, it has to be expected. The past few games have been a low point, so let's focus on the rest of the year and finish with more highs.

It's not bad luck. No comebacks at all in 30+ games where they trailed after the 8th. An obvious inability to move a runner, bunt, or make a productive out. Check out how horrible their record was last year in 1-run games and extra inning games. And it showed in the ALDS, won 2 blowouts and lost all of the close games. It has nothing to do with luck - it's what this team is.

And someone please tell Teixiera that his new approach of shaving 50 points off his batting avg has not resulted in more HRs or RBIs as compared to early in his career.

In fact, as we've learned....the laws of average so we'll be going on a hot streak very soon....this was due for this slump...

I believe somebody said last night that Texas has 1 come from behind win after the 8th. So the two best records in the league have a combined 1 win after the 8th. Do you think their offense stinks? This team has come back from TONS of games, whocares if none of them have been in the 9th inning. Does it count more if they come back in the 8th or the 9th? No...

Situationally, yes the Yankees are a terrible offensive team. And no, its not bad luck or the law of averages. We haven't played well AT ALL. We haven't managed well. All I am saying is this stuff can snowball on you if it isnt fixed. If they lose tonight I would like to hear some more excuses about bad luck, bump in the road, etc... Please keep dealing in hope instead of reality.

I'm dealing in past experience with this team. Are you kidding? Did the Yanks go 162-0 in 2009? No. Every team has these in the season. EVERY SINGLE TEAM...whether or not we make the playoffs has nothing to do with that. Because the teams that DO make the playoffs, will have all gone through a stretch like this. Have you seen the Rangers offense in July? Do you think they're missing the playoffs? Did you see the Angels after the All star break? Like, 2-8 to open up the break? Think they're making the playoffs? Have you seen the Detroit Tigers for 3.5 months of the season, do you think they're making the playoffs? If anything, the Yanks are probably the most consistent team, we just have too many "what have you done for me lately" people on this board....welcome.
