    • Should Wainwright be a reliever?

It is not a crazy idea. Morris was in the pen his first year back from TJ surgery. But his timeframe may have brought him back after spring training. But at this point I'd say let him keep working as a starter. He is making progress.

It depends. If we can sign a starter that can throw better than Wainwright, then I wouldn't mind him spending some time in the 'pen. I think that two years seems to be a far more realistic timeframe for recovery than just one. So yeah, I'd be happy to see him throw in relief to get some time in while he gets his old arm all the way back. But only if we'd somehow be able to replace him with someone better than he is.

And having said that, I don't think his stats are completely indicative of his performance. The team just seems to hate him--and it was even like that two years ago. It's like the bats shut down and the defense naps whenever he's on the mound. I'd be more than a little perplexed if I were him. It's almost like he needs to be near-ace-level to get a win out there.

In addtional defense of Waino's progress, the umpiring has been horrible behind the plate this season. He generally is a pitcher that works the corners with a variety of pitches, so if he gets squeezed (to put if euphemisticly) too much, he winds up pitching himself into jams in which a random base hit can do big damage. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems to me that the home plate umpiring (B/S calls and scoring-plays-at-the-plate calls) has been much worse this season than prior seasons ... so much worse that I would like to see MLB take a much closer and more critical look at what's happening.

When Waino gets his mojo back you can pencil in a win more often than not. If he doesn't get it back, he could blow it as a closer three nights a week. He's not having trouble with the workload, he's not hitting his spots--I don't see the bullpen doing much to change that. So, no to AW reliever.
