I am reading a book "Advice to Writers: A Compendium of Quotes, Anecdotes, and Writerly Wisdom from a Dazzling Array of Literary Lights" (http://www.amazon.com/Advice-Writers-Compendium-Anecdotes-Writerly/dp/0679763414) and there is a quote that was apropos for this thread in light of recent discussion:

"I remember [John] Gardner telling me, "Read all the Faulkner you can get your hands on, and then read all the Hemingway to clean the Faulkner out of your system."

--Raymond Carver

All gods come from the same place, the mind of man.

I was reading an apologist's website and they claimed that the bible flood story didn't come from Gligamesh because the two stories only have "superficial" similarities.

Yeah, right. Gods order the end of civilization by flood and one man is saved because he obeys the god's and builds an ark and then it comes to rest on a mountain on he sends birds out several times until the waters subside.

Superficial.

Ancient.stories are interesting
There may be some true meaning in some..but who knows what
Parts those are.
To think we understand all that has happened in the distant past is naive though.

Here is some science fiction for ya: My mom is at her home folding clothes while watching a private space craft link to the International Space Station on her tablet while texting me 80 miles away on our smart phones.

I am in the middle of several. This Thomas Mann novel is pretty thick at 700+ pages but it is easy to read. I am 25% of the way through according to the Kindle. I am reading a book of interviews as well that is lengthy. The book on writer's advice I should finish this weekend and The Pale King is a work in process but he is such a dense writer that I have to take it in small doses. Same with Seven Types of Ambiguity.

My first 2 books were both 500 page thick hard science novels..hard to get through at many points..
This one is an easy funny read...but the ideas are as deep as the other two.

Don't normaly read books about war , but this one ranks with the Forever War..and Starship Troopers as far as entertaining plus cool new science.

Scalzi writes very much like Robert Heinlein.

And they redeemed theselves by creating great art. You better get to writing because you are running out of time.

- Wow! You're just like a tortured artist... without the art.

If you could spell you might be a writer.
