Aside from roster-shuffling within the organization, nothing much can be expected to happen between now and the Winter Meetings (Dec. 7th-10th).

Last year, the Orioles signed Brad Hennessey and Donnie Murphy to MiL contracts on November 17th.

Dec. 9th, they traded Ramon Hernandez for Ryan Freel, Justin Turner and Brandon Waring.
Dec. 15th, they signed Cesar Izturis.
Dec. 31st, they signed Mark Hendrickson.
Jan. 13th, they signed Koji Uehara.
Jan. 18th, they traded Garrett Olson for Felix Pie.
Jan. 19th, they traded Randor Bierd for David Pauley.
Jan. 22nd, they signed Gregg Zaun.
Feb. 2nd, they picked up Rich Hill.
Feb. 10th, they signed Ty Wigginton.
March 1st, they signed Adam Eaton.

The Hernandez trade had more portent for the future. Turner and Waring have some potential and getting rid of Ramon cleared the decks for Matt Wieters.

It's odd to think that the most consequential trade last year was Olson for Pie.

The FA acquisitions (Izturis, Hendrickson, Uehara, Wigginton and Eaton) were pretty marginal.

If the Orioles make even one big FA signing or major trade this winter, they will have done more than they did last year.

For immediate bang on the buck , I'd say the signing of Izturis was the best of last year and although a late bloomer, followed by Pie. On the mound side it had to be Hendrickson even though he couldn't make it as a starter.

Izturis/Andino was a baby step up from the Seven Dwarfs* who played SS for Baltimore in 2008, mostly because they simplified things. We didn't have to guess who it was that wouldn't be getting on base in 2009.

*Freddie Bynum, Juan Castro, Alex Cintron, Brandon Fahey, Luis Hernandez, Oscar Salazar, and Eider Torres.

Melvin Mora played short for one inning in 2008 too, but was more analogous to Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer with to Santa's sleigh. He was an emergency substitute; not a "real" dwarf.

Yeah, but Andino and Izturis are elite defenders. None of our shortstops last year were even average. As far as WAR is concerned, Koji Uehera was the most valuable pickup followed by Felix Pie. As far as long-term improvements, I would like to see Pie as our everyday left-fielder for years to come with Reimold as the regular DH, with Reimold backing up LF and Pie backing up CF (of course with regular rests for all of our batters).

"I would like to see Pie as our everyday left-fielder for years to come with Reimold as the regular DH, with Reimold backing up LF and Pie backing up CF"

If Reimold were to be the DH then I would consider moving Jones to left and giving the centerfield job to Pie.

That's definitely better than what I said. This year Pie seemed to have better range. Thanks for correcting me.

Yup, looks right to me, except technically Mora and Moeller are still on the roster until they officially file for free agency which of course is just a matter of time.

And not a power ranger among them.

Nope. Not yet.

The "official site's" depth chart also lists the Orioles' starters as: Guthrie, Berken, Hernandez, Hendrickson, and Waters... omitting Matusz and Tillman. Even still, that doesn't seem very imposing... Not yet.

Don't ya just love it when an organization is on top of everything. Makes me look forward toward the winter meetings and those wonderful media clips I'll be seeing or reading from Trembley and MacPitcher. Dayum, I can hardly stand the wait.

Apparently, the official site's depth chart also omits Bergesen. Out of the seven names listed, I would say only Matusz came close to being as consistently effective as a starter last year as Bergesen was before he got hurt.

Question for Star Man - how do you define "power ranger?"

A legit # 4 bánger that'll produce 35+ and 100+ with a reasonable OBP. Fielder or L-Gon come to mind, but that's just pure fantasy on my part. MacPitcher has already stated that he hasn't the guts to give quality to receive quality. Of the FA corp, Bay would be my next choice. If it were in the young pup category, someone of Smoak, Gamel or Votto's caliber.

Boston will re-sign Jason Bay. Gamel (according to everything the Milwaukees are saying) is definitely available. Smoak might be.

The Orioles have plenty of money. They paid Huff a bunch last year. Mora is gone. All the other big bad contracts are gone.

I'm in the camp that says Baltimore will make a big trade (I hope with the Brewers) and will land a FA starter of some significance. I'm delighted that the World Series is over and that the home team can start attending to business publicly.

Note: trading Huff after his career year in '08 and signing Dunn would have been very smart. Let's see if the Orioles can do better this winter. The clock is running.

I think it's the 20th that clubs can start negotiations with FA's other than their own. Meanwhile we can start our Christmas lists.

Guthrie, Pie, Izturis and Hernandez for Gamel, Hardy and Mark Rogers, for starters would be nice.

Lackey would be a great FA signing, but I think it's a long shot.

Scott and some pitchers to Houston for Oswalt would make me happy.
