"Oh but at 2 for the price of 1 is cost cutting is it not?"

Ramirez and Torres made 5.35M, if the trade wasn't made it would have been Pagan and Herrera who would have taken Ramirez's spot who also cost a combined 5.35M.

Herrera was not on the Mets roster last year. Are you talking about Danny Herrera who came to the Mets in the trade of Krod to the Brewers in 2011?

Yes, Herrera was one of the final cuts in spring training last year.

What happened to him last year only 6 IP in Buffalo? How would he have been costly?

He wouldn't have been costly that is my point, the Mets would have gone with him or someone else from the minors that would have made the minimum if they hadn't traded for Ramirez. So they spent 1.15M more on Ramirez than his replacement, and 1.15M less on Torres than they would have Pagan, so again the money evens out.

The Mets went for a 2 for 1 deal to cut costs as Pagan was to be a FA after 2012.

What happened to Danny Herrera? He pitched 8 BP innings for the Mets in Sept 2011 when he was acquired after pitching 1.2 IP for the Brewers in 2011. He only pitched 6 innings last year @ AAA Buffalo. Was he injured? Where is he now? It appears the Mets got zilch for Krod then also in a cost cutting move in 2011.

It looks like he required Tommy John surgery after 6 innings of work @ AAA last year. Is he still on the Mets and will he factor in for 2013?

Krod was completely a cost cutting move, Pagan trade wasn't the Mets got back a relief pitcher who had pitched 4 consecutive years to an ERA under 3.00, for an outfielder who was coming off a bad season and was not liked in the club house. Pagan had a good year Ramirez had a bad year so the traded didn't work out, doesn't mean it was a bad trade or was made to cut costs. If they only were concerned about cutting costs they wouldn't have brought back Pelfrey who made more than Pagan, or signed Rauch or Francisco. Herrera btw had Tommy John surgery.

The FO screwed up big time by trading Pagan and not cutting or trading Pelfrey. The org is deep in pitching in the system and extremely weak in the OF.

How do you trade your CF and leadoff hitter for middle innings BP and scrub OF especially when the team is lacking in speed?

They should have saved Pelfrey's $, held onto Pagan and used the $ saved to go in on Yoenis Cespedes who Oakland stole. Their OF would be looking very good right now.

Pagan was part of the weak OF in 2011, his OPS was .694.

Now that I revisit the timeline, it appears that the Pagan trade was a knee jerk reaction to losing Jose Reyes to the Marlins by the Met FO.

Last off season, only a few hours after we learned that Jose Reyes had signed with the Miami Marlins, Sandy Alderson made some noise of his own and traded Angel Pagan to the Giants in exchange for center fielder Andres Torres and reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Pagan tested the free agent waters this Winter, but quickly agreed to re-sign with the World Champs for a four year, $40 million deal. Last season, Pagan batted .288 with 95 runs, 29 stolen bases, 38 doubles, 8 home runs and led the major leagues with 15 triples — a total that broke Willie Mays’ franchise record.

The Met FO got zilch for Krod in a cost cutting move & zilch for Jose Reyes.

After losing Reyes they then go and dump Pagan's cost in a trade instead of Pelfrey's when they are deep in SP in their org. and have zilch in the OF or in speed because they like the finger licker and don't like Pagan.

They don't do any due diligence on Yoenis Cespedes which allows Oakland to steal him and go to the playoffs.

It is because of these FO mistakes that they will s*uck in 2013 and not because of $.

Some of you guys just don't get it.....

Getting rid of KRod and his salary, was NOT a losing proposition. He wasn't getting the job done. The guy was a cancer. Met fans have short term memory loss.

Pagan was oft injured, and having all sorts of issues. Most Met fans wanted him gone. He has a good season, now everyone thinks we traded Mickey Mantle.

Make up your mind.

Ah, the irony continues. So somehow the Giants ended up with every player in that trade. I wonder which team has less to spend lol.

2:06pm: It's a minor league deal, Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports (on Twitter).

"Pagan got a a 4 year 40M deal in free agency, so if you want to talk about overpaying..."

It's not really overpaying. Believe it or not, he's one of the better CFs in the league, and that's what the market calls for. The Giants didn't suddenly forget how to run a team. They paid him what both parties agreed to.

Pagan is the better hitter.
