Let him prove that he is the player he is showing he is and then give him the big deal. Secondly, what happens when he blows out a knee, or hurts his elbow and never gets back to what he once was? They will be paying him for a years worth of service over the next 10 years or so.

How about wording that fourth sentence like this? Let Trout prove himself over
a longer period of time to see if he is worth that kind of salary. That fourth sentence
would leave most readers short of breath.
