Add alot as a pinch runner? You are talking about Brett Gardner, Right? The guy who never attempts to steal in ideal situations and for his speed, gets thrown out above what he should be? Let's just keep him out and make sure he is really healthy for next year. The Yankees are getting by just fine without a mediocre base runner.

He has an 80+% steal rate so I'm not sure how you think he's getting thrown out too often. bottom line is he DOES add a lot on the basepaths. No one else on this team can steal or run like he does. His technique needs work, but you don't get style points...

He is a good baserunner, a good fielder, and an average bat. It would be good to get him back, but lets not rush him back to he can be a pinch runner. The yankees have a team filled with spot type guys.

You're talking about a guy who has stolen over 45 bases in each of the last two seasons. Maybe he's not Ricky Henderson, but to act like he's not a serious threat on the basepaths is insane.

And by the way, he's arguably the best outfielder in baseball. He adds a lot to the team without even picking up a bat.

firstly, that's a single example with Roberts -- secondly, while I don't know that he actually DID so, at least Roberts COULD bat and COULD field (in the sense that he wasn't physically unable to -- it sounds like Gardner can't be expected to do ANYTHING else but pinchrun) -- thirdly, Gardner is fast, but he's NOT a real good basestealer -- he's NOT "instinctive" and doesn't just GO on first move/first pitch, instead he spends too much time trying to "read" the pitcher -- finally, Roberts wasn't coming off of forever on the DL

There was a difference between Roberts in 04 and Gardner in any year. There was never any doubt that Roberts was going and it was generally on the first pitch. With Gardner, and I'm not slamming him, you never know if he's going to go or what pitch. The both have about the same speed but the instincts and/or confidence level of knowing you can make it are different I think.

We're talking about the 25th man on the roster here, a spot that would otherwise likely go to Ramiro Pena, Eduardo Nunez, or Jayson Nix. And again, Gardner isn't the best at reading pitchers, but he's still a serious threat on the basepaths and would be a lot better suited to steal a base than the alternative.
