I know that I am beating a dead horse right now but since I have nothing else to do...

from David Wells nypost.com October 31, 2009:

"All the bad stuff you’ve heard about Philadelphia, site of the next three World Series games, is absolutely true.

The people in that town would give The Finger to their own mom. That’s how bad that town is.

It’s just incredible how ruthless and rude Philadelphia people are. They love their Phillies, but even Jimmy Rollins had a run-in with the fans earlier in the year and they started booing him. It’s crazy.

When I was in Philadelphia earlier this postseason with Cal Ripken Jr., Dennis Eckersley and Ernie Johnson for TBS, we got booed. We were just doing our show out in center field and people were walking by saying “You fat piece of [bleep]. . . . Tell Cal he’s g*y. . . . Ernie Johnson s*cks.”

I’m like, “Who the heII are these people?” We’ve got no part of baseball.

We’re doing the game and TBS stuff and these Phillies fans are just f-bombing us to death.

They are angry people. It’s going to be tough, because they are very vocal, foul and can maybe cause havoc on some of the younger guys, but I don’t think they will give the Yankees any problem. The only problem will be for these Phillies fans, when they lose. The Yankees will shut them up.

I put Philadelphia, Cleveland and Oakland atop my list for the worst fans in baseball, with Philadelphia No. 1.

You know what? I understand there are a lot of good people and good fans there. But I went to the NFC championship game several years ago between the Buccaneers and Eagles. I was sitting in a luxury box with a buddy of mine and a friend of his who owned the box. I was rooting for Tampa Bay, and the owner of the box got really mad at me and told me to get the heII out of his box. He was serious.

Tampa Bay won the game and advanced to the Super Bowl and we were walking to the car, and people were throwing bottles, breaking car windows and kicking car doors. So all the Tampa Bay fans were getting Eagles jerseys and putting them over their Buccaneers jerseys so they wouldn’t get beat up. It is unbelievable. That is how bad the fans are in Philadelphia. It’s not Brotherly Love in that town — it’s Brotherly Hate.

And that stinks for the true good fans in Philly who are respectable and do the right thing. The idiots take away from the good fans they have there, because I think Philadelphia does have some good fans."

None of that is really surprising. Although I would say that no matter if you are an average Joe or a former pro ballplayer, if you get invited to sit in a box of a friend of a friend at a championship game, you shouldn't be surprised if the owner of the box takes offense at you rooting against his team. C'mon Wells, get real. Even if you are invited to someone's house to watch a game on TV it is usually courteous to make sure you won't offend the host with your team allegiance.

Assuming you are a Giants fan based upon your question, I would at least let you know up front that I'd be rooting for the Skins. And if that would be an issue, I would politely decline the invite. Most people don't have an issue with it. But I can understand why someone with a box at a stadium wouldn't want opposing team fans in it. The other key thing about Wells's comment is that it wasn't his friend's box. He was brought in by a friend of a friend. I can't say the box owner isn't a jerk, but there seemed to be plenty of rudeness to go around.

I believe Philly fans are punching the dead horse. "

First they killed it.

Things are getting better though.

They lost a game--on Halloween---and yet the stadium still stands.

"I put Philadelphia, Cleveland and Oakland atop my list for the worst fans in baseball, with Philadelphia No. 1."

I've never heard of Cleveland and Oakland fans being among the worst. Is this Wells guy right? I was sort of halfway joking about trekking to Cleveland, but sort of halfway not - I wonder if I'd get torn limb from limb if I showed up in their stadium in a Nationals jersey?

I didn't know Oakland had any fans, unless they're drunk, stupid Raider fans who stumbled into a baseball game.

As for the Clevelands, back in the nineties there were a surprising number that would come to Camden Yards to see their club; they didn't seem particularly obnoxious.

Let's go Nationals!

Seems to have conveniently left Yankee fans off list

Thanks, bumsfan & roboman. If I do make my pilgrimage to Cleveland in June, I'll wear my Nats jersey and take my chances. I wonder if the "ACTA" on the back will make things better or worse? ... I guess it depends on how Cleveland is doing at that point.

I see they have obnoxious Philly fans front and center on the sports page of the Washington Post. "Our city is better than yours"? LOL. They must think they have have Better Jobs.

As much as I hate the damm Yankees and want them to lose, I almost think the Philly fans' meltdown if they lost the Series would be even funnier. It's a toss-up. Or, as they say when both choices s*ck, it's a throw-up.

Yes ..if the Phils lose...There will only be 1500 arrests and less than a hundred fires..Now if they manage to win the next three???

The Pennsylvania map will just have a big burn spot where the city used to be.

Now what if Acta became a coach for the Phillies...Braves...Marlins... Would you turn on the Nats for love???

My daughter asked me a similar question - she asked if I would still hate the Yankees or Phillies if Manny became their manager. I told her that such a hideous thing wouldn't be allowed to happen.

And todays Philadelphia OInquirer seemed to ignor ethe Yankees 3-1 edge in the WS and print a full page ad--cogratulating the Phillies on back to back world champuioships. I guess Philly can't count to 4

The perplexing part is since the average Phillie fan does not know how to read, how did they know about this?
