How in the world did Derek Jeter win this award?

Are there that many stupid fans that don't have a clue?

Derek Jeter should not have been even in the top 3 for this award.

Jeter finished 2009 batting .334, OBP .406, Slugging Pct. .465 and and OPS of .871. He also posted 107 runs scored, 212 hits, 27 doubles, a triple, 18 HRs, 66 RBIs, 30 SBs, 1 SF, 4 Sac Bunts.

Mauer on the other hand finished 2009 batting .365, OBP .444, Slugging Pct. .587 and OPS of 1.031.
He also had 94 runs scored, 191 hits, 30 doubles, a triple, 28 HRs, 96 RBIs, 4 SBs and 5 SF.

There is NO comparison with the numbers and Mauer accomplished his stats in one less month than Jeter.

Teixeira and M. Cabrera have better or at least comparable numbers to Jeter. In fact, Cano, Jeter's own team mate and Jason Bartlett also have numbers as good. But most of all, Jeter's numbers aren't even in the same 'ballpark' as Mauer's numbers this year.

I know this award was voted on by the fans...but the award this year has turned out to be a joke.

I really hope this isn't a prelude to the AL MVP award...

As you said, it was voted on by the fans, small market team vs. huge market team, so why the surprise? It's a nice honor for Jeter who had a great season but as a Yankee fan I know who the MVP was. If Joe Mauer doesn't win MVP honors they should do away with the award.

Don't get me wrong...Jeter is a great athlete...he just didn't have the numbers to be the Offensive Player of the Year in the AL in 2009.
