I think Bill Smith should jump on it before he gets to expensive. Span has been solid as leadoff hitter and outfielder. In two seasons he has averaged .305, hit 14 homeruns, stolen 41 bases. His slugging percentage of .411 and .882 on base percentage are not bad either. I also think he will develop more homerun power in as well.
.
The Twins should sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal.

Yeah I'd also like to see him signed

Where will the Twins get the money to sign everyone to a 4-5 year deal? This organization has had a long history of 1 to 2 year contracts. Long term contracts are a new thing to the Twins.

Span is not a high priority...

Mauer is the number one priority followed by the free agents that the Twins would like to see return. Until these deals get done don't expect any 4-5 year contracts for anyone else.

Can't you read? He said .882 on base percentage. Lol.

Sign him!

And so is Target field. That place I hear is pretty nice and it is new to the Twins. A lot of people keep thinking of the "OLD" way the twins operated. That's in the past, we live in the here and now and today's twins will do things different. Why is that so hard to understand? Target Field will be a packed house sellout for years to come, that is real and that is what we should carry looking forward to 2010.

Getting at 'em early tends to be higher payoff than paying market value later. It's how the Indians managed to dominate in the mid-late '90's (more or less...) Thome starts hitting 30+ homeruns? Throw a few million at him to dazzle him before somebody like the Phillies can outbid you....

Same applies to Span. It still *barely* applies to Mauer, too, I'd say....so we need to get him to 6-7 years before other teams really realize (and he realizes) what he could make if he earned above market value with, oh, i dunno...the yankees, we'll say....

You must be nuts if you don't think Mauer knows what he can get...he knows!

As for Span...I understand what your saying, but the Twins don't operate that way. Only a special few get extended contracts.

"Why is that so hard to understand?"

Because there is almost 50 years of history with the way the Twins operate...why would it change next year?

So, keep on dreaming...

i support this new park and have the whole way, but the one contention i wont make is that it'll be sold out for years to come. I bet it'll be sold out pretty well through april, but I think if there are a lot of sellouts this year they'll be on a walkup basis. I have a feeling twins fans are going to be timid and lots of them will want to come on days where they are almost sure the weather will be good for ball. That's just my feeling though.
