Cya. Glad thats done.

Tigers part ways with Marcus Thames, Matt Treanor
By Steve Kornacki
November 06, 2009, 4:46PM
DETROIT -- Outfielder Marcus Thames and catcher Matt Treanor were removed this afternoon from the 40-man roster by the Detroit Tigers.

The moves allowed the club to add reliever Joel Zumaya and infielder Jeff Larish to the 40-man roster in a house-keeping measure required as the major league-required date for rosters to be solidified approaches.

Detroit also removed infielder Michael Hollimon from the 40-man roster and assigned him outright to Triple-A Toledo. That allowed roster room for reliever Jay Sborz, whom Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said likely would have been recalled in 2009 if not for being injured.

Sborz, a second-round pick in 2003, would have been exposed to the Rule 5 draft next month at the winter meetings in Indianapolis had he not been protected on the roster.

Ryan Raburn’s development in left field made Thames expendable.

“Marcus has done a good job for us,” Dombrowski said. “He’s been an important part of our organization, and is as quality a person as you will meet.

“But we don’t see him as a good fit for us with Raburn coming on and having Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez and Clete Thomas at the corner outfield spots.”

Thames hit 26 home runs with 60 RBIs -- both career-highs -- in 2006 to help the club reach the World Series. And he hit 25 homers with 56 RBIs in 2008, when he tied a club record by hitting homers in five consecutive games in June. But his playing time was limited in 2009, when he hit .252 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs.

Raburn hit .291 with 16 homers and 45 RBIs last season, when he had 261 at-bats compared to 258 for Thames. He also had a defensive edge over Thames.

He was great for the organization. He was GREAT for us the whole time he was here. I dont care what you say, a guy who will hit you 20 homers a year without playing everday is a great player to have. He carried himself well on and off the field. Sad to see him go, hope he hops on with a great team.

I hope the Twins sign him for some righty pop off the bench late in games.

Anyone know where Craig Monroe went?

He had a few average years at best. but when you only have a little more than double the amount of RBI's then HR you know its a problem. especially since thames hit barely over 10 this year if i recall.

he has more than over stayed his welcome

I just hope Rod Allen isnt taking the news too hard...

This move comes 2 years too late. Back then we could've gotten a good reliever for him. He will be missed as much as Craig Monroe was missed.

I liked Thames but... He was not going to fill a spot that Wilkin or Strieby could not take care of for far less $$. I hope the best for him.

Prospect Strieby is not being seriously considered as a candidate for the #5 outfielder's job next season. OF prospects Casper Wells and Wilkin Ramirez are.

"Prospect Strieby is not being seriously considered as a candidate for the #5 outfielder's job next season. OF prospects Casper Wells and Wilkin Ramirez are."

I agree. I think people are too quick to be jumping on the Strieby bandwagon. He hasn't seen one pitch in AAA yet. So, lets see how he does in at least a half-season in Toledo first before calling him the savior. The earliest we might see him is a September call-up.

On top of what we both mentioned, Strieby is in need of alot of outfielder training. He hasn't even reached the Raburn outfielder glove-level yet...lol.

Also, when isolating on Strieby vs Wells, Casper's bat is better-suited for big league pitching. Strieby has holes in his swing that are a bit-too-large right now. Adequate major league hitters accomplished more in the minors than just live off minor league pitching mistakes. So Strieby has some work to do before being seriously considered -- both offensively and defensively.

Please don't agree with the Damus. And please don't be civil to him. There are some things that are just not done on this board.

That's a typical statement of a poster who cannot keep up with the Joneses around here. You are that prototype poster sicko-hopper.

Yeah. That like living in America and hating the Freedom that it was founded on.
