    • Notable Rockies Prospects Eligible For Rule 5 Draft

The Rule 5 draft will be coming up in mid-December. Here are four Rockies prospects that will need to be added to the 40 man Roster by December in order to be protected from the draft.

- C Michael McKenry
- RHP Edgmer Escalona
- RHP Cole Garner
- RHP Chaz Roe

I believe McKenry is a guarantee to be added, and Roe is more than likely. We have a crowded roster right now, and there may not be room for any others unless we want to put other players we already have protected at risk, such as Shane Lindsay, Chris Nelson or Hector Gomez.

We are now at 38 on the 40-man? Those two vacancies likely will go to Chaz Roe and McKenry. The other two I can let go as we still have Friedrich and Matzek, not to mention Chacin, Rogers, Deduno. Not like we need every arm under the radar. Seems like rule 5 draft picks are mostly position players since nobody wants to take an arm that is not major league ready and take up a spot on the 25-man squad for the whole season. Remember Marcos Carvajal? Turned out to be nothing but space on the roster.

A lot of other things have to happen first before we worry about roster space. Two weeks after the world series ends, we'll be losing Beimel, Contreras, Fogg, Herges, Marquis, and Rincon, giving us 8 open spaces. Seven of those will be filled by taking Buchholz, Corpas, Embree, Francis, Reynolds, Smith, and Nelson off the DL, back to 39. Then, spaces will open up from those whose options we decline: Embree and Giambi are basically guarantees, so we'll have between 37 and 35 occupied spaces, leaving 3-5 for player protecting by the time the Rule 5 draft occurs.
