I had never heard of this before, but today is the 94th anniversary of the Boston Molasses disaster. Has anyone ever heard of this???

21 people died when a molasses tank burst and flooded the streets of Boston. 21!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it when I read it, how in the world can there be enough molasses in one place to flood the streets and actually kill 21 people?

The tank that burst was 2,300,000 gallons of molasses.

WHO NEEDS THAT MUCH MOLASSES?????????????? Why in the world would the ENTIRE PLANET EARTH ever need that much molasses in one place? How much molasses does the average person go through in their lifetime? Maybe a gallon? And who's bright idea was it to dump it all in one tank??????????????????

I'm blown away that this could actually happen.........

It was also the main sweetener used in baked goods at the time, and according to the wikipedia article was used in making munitions as well. With so many uses it's not surprising someplace that made it had that large a quantity stored.

ROFL!!!

Joe Biden issues gun violence control recommendations to Obama today.

1. Ban assault weapons
2. Ban large magazines
3. Close gun show loophole
4. Ban molasses

Molasses used to be big back in the day, I don't think anyone uses it for anything any more expect maybe for baking certain cookies or such things. When I was a kid we always had a jar in the house. I've never purchased it in my entire adult life.

When molasses is outlawed, only outlaws will own Splenda®...

My next door neighbor used to make the best molasses cookies. Straight out of the oven with a glass of cold milk... mmm-mmm! You can't beat that.

I don't even buy regular sugar. I don't think I have ever bought an entire bag in my life.

mrs_buggles buys the sugar since she bakes every now and again. If she didn't, there wouldn't have been a bag of sugar in my house for 15 years.

See, I never bake and have no need for sugar. Once in a while if I want to sweeten my tea, I use honey; sometimes I will sweeten my coffee with maple syrup, but that is more for the flavour than the sweetener.

As a kid, I do remember my grandfather talking about it. Very sticky stuff! I never understood why they need all that malasses, but as other people have pointed out, it is used in many things.

I'm sure there is but it's just not a common ingredient/condiment anymore.

I saw a jar of it on the table at a diner I ate at recently. I was trying to figure out who would use this and on what?
