I just heard a snippet (just a snippet) of today's Mike Francesa interview with Jon Heyman where he asked if Ortiz would be gone next year and Heyman said Boston would like 2 big (young?) bats instead. What's THAT about, anyone know?

The full interview is here if anyone has time to listen to the whole thing. (I don't right now.)

OK, just listened to it and his opinion is that the Red Sox would love to move Ortiz or Lowell in return for 2 big, young bats. He thinks they'd be happy with 2 out of 3 of Holliday, Bay and Gonzales.

It's almost halfway through the interview. No time codes here, sorry.

"What's THAT about, anyone know?"

More boredom on the part of baseball writers waiting for the real off-season rumors and moves to start. I'm sure the Sox would consider moving him if they could get get 2 young big bats for him, but realistically what team out there would trade 2 young big bats for one declining older big bat? I doubt the Sox would trade Ortiz for lower level prospects, unless the prospects coming back led directly to a deal to land someone like Adrian Gonzalez.

Hmm… That sounds entirely plausible, and you're probably right.

I'd love to have two young super models to date on alternate nights too, but unfortunately what we want and what we can have are two different things. Well, for 29 teams, anyhow.

That seems to be the direction the sports heads ared going in - say something outrageous or off the wall to get people talking. Some topics spin so much, people eventually think its news.

Is it just me, or are there too many sports heads out there always trying to be attention wh0res? How about thinning the herd a little so some actual news and reporting slips in?

What is so outrageous about that statement. A lot of people, me included, have been saying for the last month that the Red Sox were going to go all out for Gonzalez. We all know that they would like to sign Bay or find a comprable replacement. The only news here would be if they tried to sign both Bay and Holliday and move Ortiz, but I doubt that even possible. Personally I would perfer Bay and either Doc Halladay or Felix Hernandez that would not be outrageous either.

I see no reason to move Ortiz. He was much better the last half of the season and I think his wrist is totally healed now.

He would be the logical choice if you signed Holliday and Bay, because you need Lowell for the field in lots of lineups. Of course signing those two is highly unlikely, Gonzalez and Bay or Holliday with Lowell being moved would be far more logical.

Why would you sign Holliday AND Bay?

Don't they play the same position?

I was just responding to the previous comments. The fact that they are both LF's is the reason it won't happen, but if it did one would have to DH leading to a trade of Ortiz. What the Red Sox really want is Bay, or replacement and a good young cleanup hitter, which Gonzalez would fit.

Ortiz is not going anywhere until after 2010.

He just might come back and hit in the low 30's of HR and drive in over 100. Pretty good.

After what he showed from June on, I don't think he is done. The BA can get back to .260 and that is sufficient. He has three good years left. He just won't be as expensive as he has been. Who he plays for will be answered after next year.

If Matsui is not extended to a multi year deal, could Ortiz wind up a NYY and finsh his career in that bandbox with two or three more good years. That would be another insult to injury to RSN Nation.

In the meantime, Theo just might get us a Nick Johnson or Connor Jackson type as the DH for 2011 and a couple of yrs after & once again the Steinbrenners slap Theo in the face.

The Sox are going to talk but will not land a big bat. Rember what happened when they tried for Texiera???

ok agreed!

I'm sorry, I didn't follow what you were responding to.

I hope we can keep Bay....Gonzalez is one guy I really want them to do whatever they need to do to get him..

The Sox aren't signing both Bay and Holliday so there's really no point in speculating about that happening. The only way the Sox would consider moving Ortiz is as I stated earlier to the OP, if it led to getting a couple of young prospects that could then be flipped to acquire Adrian Gonzalez. In that scenario then Lowell would take over as DH for the team next year, and Gonzalez would replace Ortiz's production.

I see what you're saying, but I have to agree with tedsox. I don't think this proposition is so outrageous. If you could trade an aging superstar with a few good years left for young studs that can help the team for many years, wouldn't you?

That would be an excellent move on the part of Boston management to part ways with David Ortiz. He is obviously well past his prime and whatever helped him to put up massive stats along with the other PED user Manny Ramirez, it's just way too much of a coincidence. To have him again being consistently high in the line up in 2010 will do nothing for Boston but cost them many wins. To Tito>>>"he's down (Ortiz), get over it".

Now, with a plan like that & assuming that Bay is resigned, they just might be able to compete with the NYY in 2010.

That changes the doom and gloom of mediocrity that I have been predicting, but it is wishful thinking.

My opinion: There is no way Ortiz ends up in NY. The Yanks need to leave the DH spot open for their own aging superstars (Jeter, A-Rod, Damon, Posada), otherwise they'd just resign Matsui.

You are not going to get prospects for Ortiz. As a DH he has only a few teams that would take him, and Thome is available and would be cheaper than Ortiz. You could probally move him for a bad salary or agree to pay most of his salary, but if you do that Lowell is the more logical player to move since I believe Ortiz will be the better hitter next year and Lowell has a much larger market.

I see them keeping and signing Matsui for three years.

When healthy he has been a great Yankee & unlike the post Yawkey Red Sox, the Yankees do reward their players who have done good things for them.

Love him or hate him, Steinbrenner has taken care of his troops. Why don't the Jeters, Posadas and Rivera types ever seriously test the market & explore other options. The reasons are obvious. Even when A-Rod oped out of his contract, did you seriously tink that he would not wear pinstripes.

You know something......Jim Rice was the last great Red Sox who was able to finish his career here. Dewey Evans almost finished his career here. Since then, its been an itenirent team.
