its fine if he can do it, but i dont want him trying twice every game if he's unable to pull it off with any success

while everyone always says that it's inexcusable for a major leaguer not to be able to bunt, it's still a fact that some guys just aren't any good at it... plus there is a difference between a sac bunt and bunting for hits... just b/c a guy has speed doesn't mean he's going to be able to pull it off

if he can, great... add it to the arsenal. if he can't, then let him swing away

Stubbs could sac bunt and still get a hit out of it.

Just threat of him laying down a bunt opens up opportunities for him. It draws the 3B in and makes that alone would be helpful. But also the 2B and 1B have to be aware of the bunt as well so it makes him a lot more dangerous in my opinion.

It also puts it in the pitcher's head that he has to be ready to field, which might be a good thing.

Hardly anybody has even made a living bunting. Hopper was really good at it, and look how that worked out for him. The last guy I remember was somebody who played for the Dodgers. I thought it was Dave Collins but I looked him up and I think it's not him - anybody know who I'm trying to think of? Leadoff hitter, center fielder, 1980s or so?

Anyway, getting a handful of hits in a year that way is a plus, and having the infielders play him for it on every at bat is a bigger plus. Everyone should have this skill, even the slow guys.

Exactly my point... they can't just sit there and expect the ball to come to them

I dont mind him dropping a bunt every now and then but hitting in the seventh spot he must drive in runs. The likely hood of him having runners on base when he is up is good with the hitters in front of him.

I will repeat what I have been saying about Stubbs. The most important thing for everyone to watch is his approach to hitting, period. Sure laying down a bunt now and then will be fine, but that is not what this guy is about. He worked on his swing, he also took instruction on waiting for his pitch. If it comes on the first one, smack the thing. As he and everyone else knows, K's have to be cut by at least 25%. Stubbs has the same skill set as Jacoby, make no mistake. But he needs to be able to adjust, especially during AB's. Cut down on the long swing of his. His says and so does everyone around him, that he is working hard on these things. No one needs to tell him that he was a disaster at the plate last year. Maybe that is the best thing that could have happened.

it's obvious stubbs needs to make some changes. I think the obvious template for him is rickey henderson. They are both right handed hitters. They both have/had big power strokes. they both have/had tremendous raw speed.

Only once in rickey's career though did rickey strike out over 100 times. And rickey when he was having his better seasons was good for ~90+ walks a year.

If Stubbs does nothing different with his actual "hitting" but instead just fixes his very very bad Strikeout/Walk numbers that is all it would take to raise his game a notch or two.

in this case era means nothing.... rickey's game would translate just fine to today's game.

I guess Stubbs doesn't read this board.

Not sure who is right here. But I am real big on hitting the ball with the bat.

Good point on Ricky. IF he could approach either Jacoby or Ricky's stats I would be happy

WOW!!! I mean......WOW! Is this even a real article? If it is my opinion of Stubbs just plopped straight into the toilet!

Put that man in the front seat of the uncoachable express with a one way ticket to get-head-surgically-removed-from-your-rear-ville.

I truly have no words for how ridiculously stupid, Stubbs reads in this article......what a jack wagon!!

I had hope for this idiot until I read this...now I hope he strikes out 400 times and Pete Rose himself buys a ticket, climbs out of the stands, onto the field, and pounds whats left of his crack smoked brain out!

That first statement in your post is MY line. Be very careful plagiarizing here. Some really get their feathers ruffled. Not me though.

Not sure anybody is wanting him to do it every game but it MUST be in his arsenal. There are many many reasons why bunting is great for Stubbs with his tremendous speed and not necessarily others : breaks a slump, gets runners over, brings in the 3b for a bigger hole to emerge, forces a fielder to rush a play, great tool to have late in a tight game, great to utilize against a real tough pitcher who has his number,etc....With that being said, he also has too many other tools to bunt too much. However, his issue, imho, is lacking the ability to rationalize when to do it both from a personal standpoint and a team perspective.
You're correct in that not everybody is good at it, or can be, but I'll always maintain that when you have speed like a gazelle that even a bad bunt forces a defender to hurry that play just about every time.

In reading the article on the homepage, it doesn't look like Stubbs gets why a lot of folks on here want him to be able to bunt. It's NOT that we want him to bunt every at bat but if he does do it once in a while it will open more opportunities for him. 4 for 6 last season and a .450 lifetime average when bunting... looks like he has a better chance of getting on base than with 200+ strikeouts... IMO

yea... not exactly the comments you'd like to hear stubbs making as a fan hoping to see him do some things differently this year.

Sounds like they want him to be more aggressive and that is his inclination as well...(???)...

When you're striking out 200+ times and only walking ~50 or 60 times I think a "smarter" approach is more important than "aggressiveness"... ??....

I'm well documented as being someone who isn't crazy about all the OBP/BB-obsessed present day sabermetric folks..... there is an exception though. When your boy in question runs like the wind then HE## yes take some BBs Drew !!!

I guess where his head is at will show itself soon enough.....
