Posted by John Fay:

Just talked to new pitching coach Bryan Price. I’m going to write something for Sunday. Here’s some highlights from our conversation:

–He said his deal is for three years, which is pretty standard for someone in demand. It’s noteworthy here because Dusty Baker is in the last year of his contract.

–Walt Jocketty said that the pitching coach would be involved in the pitching philosophy in the minors. Price will be. He said he’s spoken to minor league coordinator Mack Jenkins. “What you want is a consistent plan of development,” he said. “I’m looking for is a meeting of the minds and good communication. I have my ideas. But I’m not going to come in and tell everyone how to do their jobs. I’ve been on the other end of that and it doesn’t work.”

–Price worked with Brandon Webb, the king of the sinkerballers in Arizona, but he doesn’t force the pitch on his staff. “I’m an advocate of it,” he said. “But I also know that very few pitchers can get that type of action on the ball. You need your hand to work in the certain way and have a loose wrist to get the ball to come out that way. Until you work with someone, you can’t say who does and who doesn’t.”

–Price has talked to Jenkins and bullpen coach Porky Lopez to get a feel for the staff. He’s also is having video coordinator Jeff Graupe get him video of pitchers. He hasn’t talked to any of the pitchers. “It’s a little early to talk about next seen,” he said.

The first thing I thought was "do we need Brandon Webb and his salary"? Then I'm scanning through the post to see where it said we were getting him. LOL

Well, you know that will be the knee jerk reaction some people will have when they read that. Let's see, he used to coach Brandon Webb, I bet Webb will want to come here. I'm surprised that people don't say that Barroid Bonds is coming to Cincy because Dusty used to be his manager.

Especially when Webb lives just 3 hours from Cincinnati.

Yes, he will turn every pitcher we have "with the right torque of wrist action" into Brandon Webb. Hey, if he only finds one, it was worth it.

< We're getting Brandon Webb........ >

Hi Takeyetime,

Oh, what a tangled Webb we weave, when...... Yes, I was lured and got stuck in your web.

That's exciting stuff ! Then, of course, as I read your post, I got "that sinking feeling ".

Wouldn't it be nice though ? Give us a Brandon Webb, either the "original" or a "new" one ! Let's hope Price can work some magic.

Trading for Webb is my off-season fantasy. I'll go on record now predicting we'll trade for him and sign him to an extension at $18 Million.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Diamondbacks "are planning to pick up Brandon Webb's $8.5 million option" for 2010.

Webb made it very clear that he wasn't interested in negotiating a new deal, so the Diamondbacks had to either exercise the option or take their chances retaining him on the open market. Arizona has until five days after the World Series to make their decision official.

That's pro forma. The DBaks really had just two good options. They could exercise his option and keep him, or exercise his option and trade him. Letting him walk is far too risky.

We can get him if we can afford him.

agreed....

Webb has a tad over 5 years ML service and my guess is still a lot left in the tank...

30 years old with 198 starts/1319 innings and a lifetime 3.27 era + lifetime whip of 1.24.....

the dude is money, period

Webb has averaged over 185 innings a year over 7 years of organized baseball. That doesn't include his college years.

I'd be very careful about paying him 8.5 mill unless I had to. And no way would I give him anything more that a 1 year deal so the Snakes probably got as much exposure as they should have risked by picking up the option.

I think he is real close to being done. Debridement is not the same as TJ, it doesn't fix the problem, it just cleans out the garbage.

I guess I have bad memories of a couple of high dollar damaged arms that we picked up once. I think their names were Milton and Wilson.

Hmm...

It will come down to whether his sinker ball still sinks. If the surgery changes his motion and eliminates the sink, Webb becomes a very average pitcher. If that sinkerball still works, he's going to remain tough.

Winter is the time for dreaming. Add a Cy Young winner to our rotation and we have ourselves a contender.

That's some brilliant insight right there!

I see your morphine drip is on full tilt these days.

Lemme give you a little tip.......Louie was just kidding. There isn't a snowball's chance in Bermuda that the Reds will EVER attempt to get a pitcher of Webb's status.....even as damaged goods.

Reds can't get him because they are FLAT OUT CHEAP!

Diamondbacks exercised RHP Brandon Webb's $8.5 million option for 2010.

Initially the Diamondbacks were said to be leaning against exercising the option, but once Webb made it clear that he was unwilling to negotiate a new contract it was either an $8.5 million risk or free agency. When healthy Webb is obviously worth far more than that, but he made just one start this season because of shoulder problems and is no sure thing to be his usual self following surgery.
