Habanero Salsa
SUBMITTED BY: Tenille Wasemiller PHOTO BY: { Heidi }

"This is a variation of regular fresh salsa with the addition of a habanero pepper. This salsa is not for lightweights."

PREP TIME 30 Min
COOK TIME 10 Min
READY IN 1 Hr 40 Min
Original recipe yield 10 cups

SERVINGS (Help)
Servings
US METRIC

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
3 fresh jalapeno peppers
2 onions, finely chopped
2 tablespoons garlic, minced
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 (7 ounce) can diced green chile pepper
1/2 cup minced fresh cilantro
2 limes, juiced
7 (15 ounce) cans canned tomatoes
1 habanero pepper, seeded

DIRECTIONS
Roast jalapenos over a grill or gas burner until completely blackened. Seal in a plastic bag or a bowl covered with plastic wrap, and allow to steam until skins are loosened. When cool, remove skin, stem, and seeds.
Place jalapenos, onions, garlic, sugar, salt, and pepper into the bowl of a blender or food processor. Pulse to chop and blend, then pour into a large bowl, and mix with the can of green chiles, cilantro, and lime juice. Pulse the tomatoes in batches to desired size, and add to green chile mixture.
Return one cup of chopped tomatoes to the blender along with the habanero, and puree well. Strain the puree to remove any large pieces of habanero, and add to the tomatoes. Mix well, cover, and chill in the refrigerator at least one hour to allow flavors to blend.

It missed the most important direction:

Use gloves when handling the peppers and DO NOT rub your eyes while handling the peppers.

I go by there a few times a week. There is a Texas Best Smokehouse in Waxahachie Texas, it has got to be the same thing. I will look if I ever get by there when I can park an 18 wheeler.

Is it sad that I lived there 18 years(until this year) and I have never heard of Texas Best Smokehouse?

I think it is about the only light in town on the South West corner on 287. Seems like it also has a burger joint in it. Unless I am crazy and I might be. They had seasonings, nuts, sauces all kinds of high dollar stuff.

It looks like a quick stop.

Hey Tom...that Texas Best Smokehouse is actually between 'Hachie and Midlothian off of 287. I believe its across the highway from Ennis Business Forms. And yes, it does have a burger joint in it, so you're not crazy...LOL

To the author of this thread...I live about 20 miles from Italy, but rarely go there unless I'm headed to Waco or Giddings.

It's probably considered a dangerous weapon and you can't ship it across state lines. That and underage girls: two dangerous things you cannot ship across state lines.

Interesting that you identified yourself as living in "South Jersey." I'd want to distance myself from Phillipsburg, too.

I think my neighbor is going to San Antonio in the near future to visit friends. So I might have to bribe him.
