    • Biggest Surprises of '09 Season

It seems every season there is a whole slew of things that go on that few expected. Here's a few of my surprises that I didn't think about in March. Feel free to add on.

Brian Giles - Was he even on the team? Didn't see him being a nonfactor, but like a few years ago when Klesko went down for his last season with us, it was for the better of the team.

Jake Peavy - OK, we did see this coming, but there's no way to not feel surprised when you lose arguably the most dominating pitcher in baseball to trade, especially when he's homegrown.

Everth Cabrera - I knew he wasn't talented, but didn't think he would make the shift from A-ball to the Majors look so effortless. He had some growing pains, rookie mistakes, but he can flat-out play the game

Edward Mujica - When this guy started the season, I had zero faith in him, but he really matured over the season and became one of our most reliable bullpen hands.

Will Venable - Did anyone see this guy becoming the major contributing factor that he was at the end of the season? We were all thinking "utility guy at best" and they give him a chance in the big leagues and he flat-out raked.

Kevin Kouzmanoff - Gold Glove nominee and his glove goes to the HOF for breaking the 3B fielding record? I thought this was the guy who was rated a below-average defensive 3B when he arrived.

Mat Latos - This kid is nasty. Just think what he'll do when he learns how to pitch!

Wade LeBlanc - His first couple starts were ugly, I thought he didn't have what it takes, but he matured several levels in a matter of months, and came back to the team and went 3-0 with a fastball that barely touches 90mph. I think he is a smart pitcher that will learn to make adjustments well and just mess with hitters minds, i.e. Maddux

Sorry if I took too many good ones, but '09 was a surprising season! In May I wouldn't have believed I'd be saying this, but I'm looking forward to 2010 Padres baseball.

What about Gregerson and Adams? Gregerson was the number 2 guy in the Khalil Greene trade and he became a lights out 7th inning guy and 8th inning guy when Adams wasn't playing. And Adams was just incredible. A sub-1 era in nearly 40 innings. I still have to say all in all, my 2 biggest surprises are Everth and Gregerson

Kevin Kouzmanoff's defense does not surprise me. I said from the very beginning he was going to be at least average and everyone called me crazy.

Venable did not surprise me either. The kid has a lot talent. Same goes for Latos.

Mujica and none of the relievers surprised me. KT always pulls people out of the woodwork.

The biggest surprises for me were Giles, Cabrera, Correia, Gerut, and Headley.

I expected the usual from Giles. I didn't expect much from Cabrera. I thought Correia would be a #5 or swing man and he pitched like a #3. I thought Gerut and Headley would have good years and both were disappointing.

Wade LeBlanc. The guy was a disaster at the major league level until his last call-up when was straight dealing and certainly has earned serious consideration for a spot on the major league roster. He was really fun to watch.

Biggest suprise for me was Headley. From last season I thought he was going to have a good season. He strikes out too much but he seems to be getting better.

How about that Cliff Floyd was nearly nonexistent? I figured him to play a big bench role and DH for IL play. Did he even get any AB's at all?

He had a total of 17 PA, one of which was a walk so a total of 16 AB's
