    • Moorad's first great move: The Hiring of lil' larry

The Padres are doomed to follow the Dbacks. Moorad hired Josh Byrnes, an assistant GM with the Red Sox and also in his mid-thirties when hired. For a few seasons Byrnes seemed like a good GM, but most Dbacks fans now have serious questions about his abilities. On top of that Moorad is a fool. He is responsible for giving Eric Byrnes a 3 year, $30 million contract extension. Also, if all goes according to script, Bud Black will be fired in two or three years and replaced with a lackey (I don't mean John Lackey) of the new GM with no coaching or managerial experience. It may turn out worse for the Padres, because the Dbacks can at least afford a $75 million payroll.

See, i have a different opinion about Moorad not completely going public with the hiring for a while. I think it is a huge breath of fresh air, after 14 years of Towers blabbing away and telling the whole world the latest padres rumors before things actually happened. Moorad respects the game and Bud Selig's wishes.

Maybe, the fact of the matter is Hoyer has to pass his physical, he may need Tommy John surgery.

I would guess the deal is verbal at this point and they want to make it official when Hoyer signs on the line and the process is complete.
I also like not jumping the gun like the former front office did a lot. I think we felt lied to and a lot of deception.
If Moorad can stay honest with us and stay in contact he will really keep the fans on his and the Padres side.

Agree 100%. They needed a GM who has had success with drafting and developing players and the Red Sox are one of the best in the business.

Like padsrbums already mentioned, this move has the potential to be great for the Padres in the long run. Hoyer has worked under a great staff in Boston, especially Theo. Let's hope he emulate that here in SD as a GM. I am not ready to tab him as a "great move." The reason's simple: he has been an assistant for a while with very limited GM experience. It's interesting to see what his first move will be. I have a feeling Adrian will be shipped out of SD to Boston. Obviously, I am speculating with no evidence. Just a hunch I have.

I think there is a lot of potential for a trade their. It would give Hoyer an opportunity to bring in a bunch of good prospects he's familiar with.

"Hoyer has worked under a great staff in Boston, especially Theo"

That's the same as Josh Byrnes. Be afraid if he starts talking about "organizational advocacy" when he hires a manager and coaches someday. Be afraid if Moorad and Hoyer sign a player to an extension for big $$$ because he is a fan favorite (like an Eric Byrnes). Actually, I hope Moorad tells Hoyer to make a trade for Eric Byrnes, even if the Dbacks have to pay part of his salary.

I think someday alot of teams are going to be sorry they didn't hire Kim Ng.

Hoyer and Byrnes are not the same person. Just because they have held the same position doesn't mean he's going to make the same mistakes.

But Moorad is the same person and he is the one that gave Eric Byrnes the contract extension with a full no trade clause. It only takes one bad deal to affect the team for several years, even after that player is gone. Yes, I know every GM makes some bad deals, but some bad deals are much worse than others. It seems like after all those years as an agent he gives contracts as if he were still an agent and not an owner. I'm just saying you should have a little skepticism with these guys.

And he was also a first time owner. People are able to learn from their mistakes.

It's not like Byrnes got an 8 year extension. He got 3 years 30 million after having a very good year at only 31 years old. It's not like he gave Mike Hampton 8 years and 121 million or Barry Zito 7 years 126 million with a 2014:$18M club option and ($7M buyout). Byrnes hit for a good average, decent OBP, 30 doubles, 20 homers, and 50 SB's and only got 3/30.

The deal cost the Dbacks Carlos Quentin. It's tied up money the Dbacks could offer to Drew or Reynolds. There are those of us that believe that one deal has set the Dbacks back at least three years until they can compete for the Dvision title. $30 million over three years is another FA quality bat or another quality FA SP. If it wasn't for the injuries, I bet Moorad would say that was a good deal even today.

You have to look at Byrnes' career numbers to know he was never worth anything close to 3/$30 with a full NTC. At best, he is a 2/$10-$12 guy, and even that is a stretch.

"If it wasn't for the injuries, I bet Moorad would say that was a good deal even today."

And if he put up 3 more years like 07 it would have been more than worth it. It's not Moorad's fault this guy has had these injuries.

I'm not saying it was a good move I'm just saying it could have been a lot worse.

Quentin is a much better player.

Anyway. Good luck with your new ownership and new GM. I really like the Padres. I would be very happy if the Dbacks and Padres would alternate each year winning the NL West for the next 10-12 years, assuming my Dbacks couldn't win it 12 years straight. lol

I agree. You can't blame the guy for locking up byrnes to 10 million a yr for 3 years. Giles made 10 million this year also and didn't even play... it happens. And you never expect your ace and maybe the best pitcher in the NL to go down for the year with an injury. The dbacks were counting on that 1-2 punch of Webb and Haren as well as other good pitchers like Davis, Scherzer, Garland. It was a very good rotation at the beginning of the year. And who could have predicted that Young would go play so badly that he would be sent to AAA. I still believe that the DBacks have a very talented team. I mean they have great starting pitching, a good shortstop, maybe the best right fielder in the national league in upton, a 40 home run guy in Reynolds, a gold glove caliber cf who has hit 30 hrs in a yr, a solid catcher and other solid players. I expect them to contend in 2010 and think it is ridiculous that Josh Byrnes and Moorad are being blamed for the disappointing season they had.
