Last week a jury in Oregon Awarded $850,000 to the parents of a Junior College pitcher who got hit in the head with the ball in a game. The family's attorney claimed that aluminum bats are not as safe as wood. They started that reaction time is reduced when the ball comes off an aluminum bat.
There has been some internet chatter about banning the type of bats in question. Do the Tides, Baysox, Keys, etc. use Aluminum bats? This could also explain why some guys put up big numbers in the minors but can't hit at the major league level. How much does the use of Aluminum bats in high school and college skew the numbers of both pitchers and hitters. Just throwing the topic out there for discussion.

Is this the same story your referring too? I ask b/c this story is out of Montana and not Oregon.

HELENA, Mont. — A jury has found the maker of Louisville Slugger baseball bats failed to adequately warn about the dangers the product can pose, awarding a family $850,000 for the 2003 death of their son in a baseball game.

The family of Brandon Patch argued that aluminum baseball bats are dangerous because they cause the baseball to travel at a greater speed. They argued their 18-year-old son did not have enough time to react to the ball being struck before it hit him in the head while he was pitching in an American Legion baseball game in Helena in 2003.

The District Court jury on Wednesday awarded a total of $850,000 in damages against Hillerich & Bradsby for failure to place warnings on the product. However, the jury decided the product was not defective.

Debbie Patch says she hopes the decision will make more people aware of the dangers associated with aluminum bats and that more youth leagues will switch to using wooden bats.

The attorneys for Hillerich & Bradsby declined to comment.

"Do the Tides, Baysox, Keys, etc. use Aluminum bats?"

No, they use wood bats only in the minors. Aluminum bats are mainly used in collage and high school ball.
