they have to be kidding. and next to citi? how can the commish approve that? is madoff going to get a pardon so he can be the head croupier? if they want a casinio, fine, but sell the club. i wonder if this is in anyway linked to the AAA team move to vegas. presumably there is a gaming commision in NY that will want its own investigation regarding the 2 ponzi schemes fred & co. were "entangled" in. i am not accusing them of wrongdoing, but this doesn't look right.

just the thought of having a casino next to Citifield disgusts me,there are so many things wrong with this idea but the worst of them is even the possible consideration of such an arrangement by ownership IF indeed that's the case

i think we have to wait for more details but if this is true they should be ashamed as they've embarrassed themselves and the Met franchise once again

maybe the Wilpons will change the name of the team to the New York Bets

if building a casino within arms reach of a MLB franchise is how they were going to try to recoup losses from the Madoff scandal the rest of the owners should honestly vote them out

also, I thought mixing sports and gambling was frowned upon by MLB?? Isn't that right Selig? I expect you, Selig, to fight this because of this reason. But WILL he? I definitely wouldn't be surprised if he turned his head...

"Selig and Wilpon are longtime friends." -New York Post

Just in case there was still any doubt about that issue...

I think it's a great idea and will undoubtedly generate revenue and boost business in the surrounding area. Just think of how many more used/stolen auto parts and tires local businesses will sell.

Fred can get Pete Rose to "fix the team"! Plenty of money for the Mets once the betting begins!

I believe it's illegal for baseball owners to own Casino's near MLB Ballparks

I thought anyone in baseball had to stay away from any form of gambling.

according to the article, I believe it says they are teaming up with some Native American company who would pay no taxes on the property and technically own it with the wilpons investing in it...so they are TECHNICALLY not the owners. It would be frowned upon and Selig SHOULD fight it...but I doubt he will.

Bud Selig I believe will fight it because it would set off potential gambling by the Mets players, opposing team players which could lead to other issues later down the road if players get in debt by getting involved with the mob

IF the Mets got away with this ,, I would imagine every other team would want to have a indian owned casino next to their park also.

And not for anything -- but that is a legal loophole that should be closed.

I don't see the problem since it will still be illegal to make any Sports Bets in NY other than horse racing. And I bet there are other baseball owners that also own race horses. Nevada is different since they do have Sports Betting but have some restrictions. Like you can't bet on any College game played in Nevada or by the Running Rebels (I believe). Don't know about professional baseball in the State.

The proposal was rejected by the city.

I don't think this will fly with MLB. I can't see them approving a gambling casino right next to the stadium.

Does MLB have the authority to approve or disapprove of anything that is build near a baseball stadium? They may ban the Wilpons from having any ownership in the casino but they have no right to stop anything from being built there. If the Wilpons can get the ok from the city and State they would be able to sell the land for a tidy profit and be separated from any interest in the operation of the casino.
