Just because we signed a bunch of 40 year old has-beens that other teams didn't want does not mean our pen will be good next year. None of us would have even noticed if these pitchers we added didn't crack a major league roster this year. So enough with the baseless optimism. Until the pen actually performs well, it has not been fixed. There is no reason to expect good things out of these old, unwanted pitchers.

Mets improved the BP though depth, no one is saying any of these guys in particular is going to be Mariano, but at least if they are terrible we will have someone ready to replace them, unlike last year where we had Manny Acosta who had a 9.00 ERA on April 27th and wasn't sent down until May 29th when it was 11.86.

Right now the bullpen includes Frank Francisco, which is disconcerting.

However, it also includes the likes of: Bobby Parnell, Josh Edgin, Jeremy Hefner and Robert Carson. Jeurys Familia could be interesting if he doesn't go back to starting in AAA and minor league pickup Greg Burke was stellar for Baltimore's AAA affiliate in 2012.

Add questionable veterans Scott Atchison (Tommy John candidate?) and Latroy Hawkins (old as dirt), mix in a slightly less questionable veteran like Brandon Lyon and this might be an okay bullpen. At the very least it won't be the same faces from last year's disasterbacle.

Mike

Different faces...same disaster...actually that's a little harsh, but we are still two solid guys (one of whom is a closer) from being average.

so what you're saying is we should sign a guy w/ a track record of success and experience closing....a guy that can swing b/t set up man and closer if need be....a guy that had success recently and has, in most seasons, proven to be a positive force in the pen

i agree....oh wait...thats pretty much what we are signing in brandon lyon...

My only real issue with your post ... LaTroy Hawkins (old as dirt) ... please insert "in baseball years". We that are actually old as dirt have issues with a 40 yr old being in our midst. My thanks to you. Pretty good post otherwise..

Lyon is a great signing, but we still need one more guy that can really be a reliable closer

unless we take a chance on wilson and he happens to work out, i don't see where they get that guy barring trade

i mean, who is the most established closer left on the market? valverde - a guy who lost his closer job during the year for stretches & was abysmal in the playoffs...not exactly what i would call reliable
