The Mets were in trade talks with Toronto for a week before rumors broke, and they were never linked to Cowgill before they traded for him. Maybe the Mets just don't tell the media everything they are doing

You're missing the point. The Mets could have discussed any number of trades with the A's all we know is the results, and never did we hear that the two teams were talking . The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. (I stole that from the Boondocks)

If Cowgill makes the team, it means no one else was acquired, not even Hairston.

Cowgill is the platoon in CF no matter if Hairston is here or not. If they bring back Hairston or another righty that player platoons in Right with Baxter. Duda plays left unless they trade him.

We heard about that one pretty much after players were agreed upon (confirmed by both GMs) They were having serious talks for a week prior and the media was talking about Olt. Just because something isn't being discussed publicly doesn't mean it isn't taking place.

I read the discussions with Toronto were a week prior to the winter meeting. Discussions didn't become serious until Syndergaard was added. Apparently, Toronto is pretty tight lipped, but the deal was still being reported in various forms, days prior to it being finalized.

And when did you hear this? Not before the trade.

IMO, most of the so called rumors are just base-less media speculation, like Cory Hart, etc., especially this time of the year.
