I still don't get the trade. Why would they just discard Beato for a backup catcher? Makes no sense unless they were getting money somehow from it.

Yeah, Beato was coming off an arm injury last year, so it's not unreasonable to think he'll pitch much better this year.

At the time, I figured the Mets would re-sign Shoppach as their backup.

Considering the season was already over by the time they traded for him, I agree it seems pretty odd.

shoppach at one time was considered to be a better than decent starting backstop for any mlb team to have. he fell off that train .maybe the mets were rolling the dice he would be and it just didnt happen?

Must be his arm is shot. Originally people were talking about him being a starter. He had a lot of value at first.
