You do if your team has no outfield, no catcher, no bullpen and no hope for any success in the immediate future.

It's amazing that some people STILL don't get it. They would have extended him if they couldn't trade him. They needed to fill multiple holes and they probably will only do that through trade.

So you expected to win with Dickey over the next two years? I didn't and I don't think many others did either. So why keep him when you can trade him for a couple of players who can be part of this team for the next decade or more.
