The progress being made is the Wilpons spinning RA being greedy because they upped their initial unacceptable low offer to a still unacceptable amount. Bye RA.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-throw-curve-knuckler-2-year-20m-extension-offer-article-1.1217382

from Daily News:

"NY Mets pitching to keep National League Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey with two-year, $20 million contract extension

As the Daily News has been reporting, Dickey has been asking for a two-year extension for approximately $26 million, totaling $31 million over three years. The Mets now are closer to a three-year deal worth $25 million total"

Only $6M apart. Not very much in grand scheme of things. Still plenty of time before 2013 Opening Day to work out a deal.

What was their offer and what should it be?

According to Dickey just this morning, negotiations are still far apart.

"Speaking at a Mets holiday event, Dickey suggested he'd likely leave as a free agent after the 2013 season if he and the Mets don't agree to an extension, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.com reports (Twitter links). Dickey said he feels he has been more than fair and expressed disappointment with the negotiations."
