The royals got swindled and should have traded for dickey.

They were deceived by the age. Age is overrated, Dickey will win the CY again in 2013.

their younger players haven't done anything for them, so I don't know why they are against older players, especially someone like Dickey who is a leader.

James Shields in the last 4 years has had an ERA in the 2's the 3's the 4's and the 5's

But yet Dickey is the one that is "so unpredictable" you know with his highest and lowest ERA in the last 3 years being a difference of 0.55 points.

if we had thrown in Niese then the Royals got swindled. Everyone who is knocking this trade is conveniently forgetting Wade Davis who is damngood pitcher himself and under team control for 5 seasons.

He's not. But Andrew Friedman is better than Sandy Alderson.

We both know this had nothing to do with the GM. The Royals clearly wanted Shields over Dickey. There's nothing Sandy could do about that.

I stand corrected... they have shields for 2 yrs and an option... he is a top 10 pitcher.... its davis who is the real question mark.

There is a stigma attached to the knuckle ball. Shame for Dickey, he's definately been great for us, and he was a Minaya signing Alderson lovers.

Shields is not close to a top ten pitcher, he has dad one season in his entire career with an ERA under 3.50, Dickey has had an ERA under 3.50 for three straight years.

I'd rather just re-sign Dickey and trade Niese at this point. I'm not worried that Dickey is going to have injury problems of any sort, and Niese would appear to have more trade value.

Honestly that was an awful trade for them. Shields isn't going to go out and win the Cy Young Award like Dickey can do.

"Dickey, he's definately been great for us, and he was a Minaya signing Alderson lovers."

Dickey WAS an Omar signing. For 2010 season ONLY.

Alderson started end of Oct 2010. AFTER Dickey's 1 yr contract Omar gave him ended. Dickey was 36 yrs old. Missing elbow ligament. 2010 was Dickey's ONE AND ONLY good season his WHOLE career to that point. Dickey's lowest ERA before that was 4.20 in 2009. Before that never even got below 4.50!!!

So after Dickey's ONE good season Alderson signed Dickey to 2 yr/ $2M yr contract. With 3rd yr club option for $5M. Would've been completely understandable if Alderson let 36 yr old pitcher w/ potential elbow problems (no elbow ligament) & just ONE good season walk. But SA recognized Dickey's potential after just that ONE good season!!!

BTW -- If Wilpon's only goal was to shrink payroll why'd he let Alderson sign Dickey for $2M/ 2 yrs?? Why not let old pitcher w/ potential elbow problems & only ONE good yr just walk? Would've been VERY easy to sell that reasoning to fans & media!!!

Yeah so much credit should be given to Alderson for "recognizing" the talent of a guy who had just put up a 2.84 ERA and was willing to sign for cheap.

And if you don't think the Wilpons wanted to shrink payroll...why did it? You're arguing with facts on that one. Didn't we have the biggest payroll drop from one year to another ever?

2001-2009 Dickey's career ERA = 5.43 ERA (442.2 inn) !!!!!

36 yr old pitcher w/ no elbow ligament. With ONE good season. GMs were lining up to sign THAT guy??? To multi million $$$/ multi yr contract??? In what universe????
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. Payroll did shrink. But NOT January 2011 when Dickey was signed!!!! Shrank AFTER 2011 season!!! Mets could've let Dickey walk & NOT forked over $2M for old pitcher w/ no elbow ligament & only ONE good yr w/ 5.43 career ERA before 2010!!!
