If the 2013 roster has the following:

a good defensive center fielder
a leadoff hitter with speed
a better offensive or better defensive catcher
one other major-league caliber outfielder
a new closer
2 additional relievers signed via free agency or acquired from another team

Short of that it is clear the Wilpons have NO desire to compete

Right now, we have the same team as last season.

Adding just one hitter won't get us 10 more wins, unless that player is Miguel Cabrera. We need to improve at multiple positions. I don't think they need to be costly fixes, but we can't go into the season with this pen, catcher and this OF. Not making any other improvements shoes a lack of commitment to winning.

We don't play in a bubble. The Braves, Phillies and Nats are all better than us. The Philies are all on the decline, but the Braves and Nats have strong young cores. It will be very difficult for us to keep up with those two organizations.
