If the prospects that we would have to give up are similar, which of these two 1B would you prefer? I think I would rather have Pena, and his .227 or w.e. it was BA, than Dunn because Pena has a much better glove at 1B. What do you think?

Hands down Carlos Pena, he has put up very similar OPS's to Dunn while Dunn played in 2 of the last 3 years at GABP and as you said Pena is a GG man.

Dunn, Younger more consistent, plays a lot more games, and has a better OBP. Plus Dunn can play LF or 1b which gives us more options, where as Pena only plays 1b. Plus I still think Dunn will break out even more given a big bat to hit behind him which he has never had.

between those 2, pena because of the glove. i rather spend our chips on crawford, and if we don't have enuogh for A-GON, then wait on ike davis. i don't think a-gon will be available this off season, but thats the guy. if he is available, you have to figure boston has the inside track. so, make a big play for crawford, extend him, hope ike is the real deal and ready by august, and plan for 2011. #2 starter is the head scratcher.

i like dunn, but he cannot play 1b or lf, he can play dh. he has real citifield power, so if he is available and there is no other alternative, i would consider dunn, but really he needs to be AL dh, his defense kills.

I would love to see Crawford here, but I would rather deal the kids for a 1B since there are better LF options in free agency. I would not be afraid of blocking Ike Davis at 1B since Pena only has 1 year left on his deal. If Pena plays well here, which I would hope, then we can resign him to play 1B. This is nice because it can help prevent us from rushing him and allows us to trade Francouer or F-Mart down the road since many feel that Davis is athletic enough to handle the outfield, he certainly has the arm to pull it off. He actually looked pretty good in RF from what I saw during the that World baseball thing he played at in Germany.

Dunn can't play LF or 1B, teams just like to put him there when they can't use a DH.

they both have raw power, pena has a better glove @ first dunns power lets him play on the feild period. on the other hand ike from what i seen personaly IMO is the real deal if you can get either cheap for 1 year go for it if we get dunn and ike comes up our LF will kill him and all you bashers here will want him away even though he is hitting 40+ with a real bat in front and behind him you would need a younger more faster CF ( beltrans knees? ) I would leave frenchy he is by far 1 of the best defensive RF in the game ...... so in reality it is a tough choice but i would say dunn he has that pure power

Pena's slugging last 3 seasons with his home park as Trop Field 627, 494, 537, avg OPS 937

Dunn's slugging last 3 seasons with 2 of the 3 played at GABP, 528, 472, 529, avg OPS 906.

Pena has as much if not more power than Dunn and in fact each of the last 3 seasons had higher slugging numbers. Toss in his GG and it is a no brainer, Carlos Pena hands down.

But he also doesn't play as much, with all the injury problems we have had it would be nice to have a guy that has averaged over 158 games played for the past 6 seasons, Pena had an amazing season in 2007 but hasn't been as good since. And as far as career numbers go, Dunn has Pena beat in AVG, OBP, and SLG. Plus he is a younger.

The logic in your thinking escapes me, bottom line is that Pena produced and did so as well if not better than Adam Dunn and played GG D.

2007 148 games 46/121/282/411/627/1037
2008 139 games 31/102/247/377/494/871
2009 135 games 39/100/227/356/537/893

Pena has outperformed Dunn in the past 3 years in playing less games. Over 162 games the projected numbers for Pena are 45/124/252/381/553/934. Carlos has averaged 141 games a year over the last 3 years and this season it was cut short when he got hit with a pitch and required hand surgery.

Sorry but I will take 141 games from Pena and his average of 39/108/252/381/553/934 and GG 1B compared to Adam Dunn and his numbers over a full year and below average D at 1B.

Or think of this, Adam and his extra 28 games was the month of Sept/Oct that Pena missed. Adam had some great numbers that month 3/14/212/322/333/655 was moved out of the 4 hole the last week and a half of the season because he wasnt hitting and benched for the last 3 games of the year. So in the same number games 36 bombs and 91 RBIs, not even close to what Pena did.

I like Crawford for Citi Field. A run saved is as valuable as a run scored, and Carl can cover all that real estate. Plus, his speed would let him use all that space to his advantage at the plate. With his wheels, a gapper is going to go for a double, more often than not. If Reyes is healthy, the thought of those two on the bases would make me as happy as it would make opposing pitchers crazy. But I still think we need another power bat, and the perfect guy would be Prince Fielder: a monster bat and a bona fide team leader, all in one. Too bad Wilpon won't pay what he can afford and put the best team on the field.

Once again though he isn't as consistent, his one great year makes a three year average look a lot better, but in the next two yeas combined since 2007 his average dropped over .050 points and his slugging dropped over .100 points form what he did in 2007. Take out 2007 and Dunn really has him beat offensively, where as Dunn is very consistent and you could pretty much takeout any of the last six years, without having much of an effect.

I wouldn't mind Crawford either, opposing catchers would have panic attacks.

Pena's worst year, 31/102/247/377/494/871 in the last 3 years. All this in 139 games and having his home field as Trop Field.

Projecting this over a full year 36/119/247/377/494/871, Dunn has never has those types of RBIs and in fact when you look at Pena and his GG and costing only $11 million in 2010 compared to Adam's $12 million no brainer again as to who you want at 1B for the Mets and his impact on the team.

Pena's slugging each of the last 3 seasons has Dunn's beat and Pena played in Trop Field as well. Even more if Pena does come close to his 2007 season again, it overwhelms any numbers that Adam has put up. Pena's worst season in the last 3 years is as good as Adam's normal ones.

Knowing as well that the Rays want to remove salary from their books Pena is available and the Nats are not looking to move Adam. So, to get Adam it would cost far more than it would to get Pena.

Between the production and cost simple answer is Pena.

With Reyes healthy and Crawford in the lineup, think how many more fastballs our guys would be seeing.

I agree, I would love to have Crawford. However, considering the weak 1B free agent market I think that it makes more sense in trading our prospects for a first basemen and signing a LF.
