There is a big name pitching coach available whose name I have not seen mentioned. Leo Mazzone. He was an unqualified success in Atlanta with hall of fame arms and a dismal failure in Baltimore with AAA arms. But that is pretty much the lot of any coach or manager, you're only as good as your players. Leo's been out of baseball a few years and may not be interested, but would you give him a call if you were Acta? Leo's not a pitching guru, but guys like Maddux, Glavine and John Smoltz all say he helped them. Those are pretty good references. But let us remember, Leo got his start as a young pitching coach moved up from AAA. We have a well respected AAA pitching coach. Would we be upset if he gets the job?

Well, when's the last time cleveland brought in any big names to the club and did they work out? I'd guess the last one was eddie murray and he's not even in baseball anymore. It wouldn't bother me if they promoted from within the org. with any of the coaches.

Luis was not the pitching coach. But I would not be against bring him back in some capacity. Don't think it's likely though

Maybe we'll see Pat Corrales come back . He was Acta's 3rd base and bench coach in Washington .

I saw Acta's press conference today and Blowhard Drennen also talked to him about rehiring Luis Issac as bullpen coach, and I got the "impression" that he will have to clear all his coaching choices with Dopelan/Cheapiro. They may have Acta on a very short leash.

Do you like what you have seen so far? (it's early obviously)

I don't think Issac was the reason why our pitching plummeted. Heck, it started in 2008.

Leo would not be a bad choice.
I wouldn't mind seeing Luis Issac to come back and help in the bullpen but promote and let Scott Radinsky be in charge of the bullpen pitchers.
Those moves would certainly give us all more hope for our pitching staff. I know others talk about Willis doing a great job because of back to back Cy Young winners but I really believe that Willis had very little effect. As a matter of fact, Cliff had to go to AAA to get his confidence back, much like Fausto a couple of years ago, who regained his confidence back (even though for only one season) after talking to his winter league coaches.

We have some very good pitching talent here but they need coaches that can develop these arms and in some cases, their minds.

If Manny can bring a winning attitude and do everything he can to put the players in a position to win, we should be ok. It all comes down to talent. We have some very talented players, but it's all going to boil down to our pitching. Our AAA players got a taste of what it's like last year. Let's hope they learned what it's like and what it takes to win in major league baseball. We need a couple of more quality pieces. If the FO goes out and gets them, we "should" be ok. If they don't, it may be a rerun of 2009.

Ya the pitching is an important piece, obviously. I agree with everything you said.

After watching this game for so many years,I have came to the conclusion that former(decent or good)catchers make the best pitching coaches! Therefore,if Sandy Alomar is available he would be a great choice, after all, catchers know more about calling a pitching game than anyone on the field, except for possibly a few of the most veteran pitchers.

You’d think that with all the sophisticated analysis the game’s techno-geeks have come up with over the past couple of decades regarding such BS as how many hits a pitcher gives up on a 2-1 count against a left handed batter after the sixth inning with the wind blowing in from right field that we’d have developed some sort of objective view of coaching skills but there's still no answer as to who makes a good coach.I guess the numbers aren't there to be crunched or we'd have heard from them by now.......catchers have to understand the whole game and bench players watch every game unfold.I guess that's why catchers and less successful players end up as coaches.I'm still waiting for sabermetrics to deliver the answer...

That may be true, but i was agreeing with Wart on what we need (Pitching). I was NOT talking about the coach(es).

I think the pitching is there, they just need someone like Sandy to work with them.Might need some tweekin in the pen, however Mastrson,Laffey,Huff,Sowers and hopefully Westbrook have the arms, they just need to have the right supervision. I do hope Jake makes a full recovery,he is a smart pitcher and possesses the ability to get ground ball outs.I didn't mention some of the younger talent for a specific reason,it seems that most are PLTBNL and many of their names allude my worn out mind!LoL

I think they could use another arm for the rotation. They could save their money and see what we have if they do NOT think were going to contend this season. I don't think were going to contend so i would probably save the money for next off season. ( Which is NOT a lot.)

I guess it would depend on what they think (if this team is a contender or not).

Name one pitcher Sandy has helped by coaching him....

I would not mind Sandy as the bullpen coach but no way do I want him as the pitching coach..

Of course, you want to slip our hitting coach past MLB because he's been banned for life.

So I guess we take your opinion with a grain of salt.

Pete Rose would be a great hitting coach...

Sandy Alomar would not be a good pitching coach... At least not for a few years....

Your basing that off of nothing except his own ability to hit.

There is no more base behind that argument than their is behind Sandy being a "good" pitching coach.

It's not about what you did as a player, it's about your ability to communicate and teach.

Eddie Murray is a great example of what you are talking about.
